Xbox has an identity crisis. It doesn't know if it wants to be a games machine or a multimedia hub, casual or hardcore...etc. Microsoft will have a tough time balancing all of this out at the beginning of next-gen.

IF they can pull it off though...they could be market leader. But who knows what Sony has planned. They'll attack that market as well.

Why do you refer to it as an identity crisis? I'd argue trying to appeal to all markets has kept sales strong.

You can't do everything at once. Microsoft needs to market it as a games machine for the first year or so then move on to other things such as multi-media and Kinect. They need to focus on 1 main selling point and that should be the games IMO. Of course I'm not saying they should advertise other features, I'm saying they should get their priorities straight. My worst fear is consoles becoming PCs and so I dislike it when they are advertised as one.

The main focus for Xbox 360 has always been games. MS has advertised other features, but games were always the main focus. Its the games that really distinguish a platform and move hardware.

What does it matter if consoles become PCs? As long as there is competition publishers and developers will keep raising the bar when it comes to games and other features.

The primary focus of the Xbox is to be a multimedia hub connected to your phone, computer and tablet as one home hub. From the message Microsoft has been sending for the past three years is that games are an end they must meet to achieve their multimedia goals, so it will be met. Eventually they will take it seriously when the next console starts, but somewhere at the halfway point they will drop the ball completely for their multimedia aspirations.

If that's their primary goal than Sony and Nintendo need to step up their primary goals. Because MS doesn't appear to be any less focused on games than their competition.

I don't know what you mean by, "they will drop the ball completely for their multimedia aspirations." It just doesn't make sense considering their multimedia aspirations have already been successful thus far.

They will keep pushing to make sure they take Sonys thunder as the multimedia console. As Sony puts multimedia as a secondary to the games, the Xbox name has expanded into phones, and more.

Hello im new here an i wanted to join the conversation. I think that Microsoft is pretty set with the multimedia i mean look at the major updates that they have done to XBLA compared to Sony's PSN intergrating things like Bing,Internet Explorer,Windows 8 and soon Skype which already replaced Window messenger and will replace Voice chat Party chat and Video Kinect which will make those services a lot better and these are things that Sony won't have for their service so i belive that they are miles ahead. The only problem they have is their Xbox Live Marketplace and their strict policies that need to change in order to compete next gen.

To be honest the 360 is casual all around.

That's a jab. Like me saying Ps3 would be a casual console if move wasn't an obvious, blatant and shit copy of the Nintendo Wii. They tried to be casual and failed. Jab.

You have a point,BUT when was the last time Sony pushed the move?

Microsoft is still pushing Kinect, which is their main priority next gen. Casual? Indeed

You know their next/current gen game plan already? Fill us in, please?

Wonderbook is pretty recent isn't it? I'd call that a push.

When was the last time Move was advertised? Don't worry I can wait.

He just said Wonderbook....it had marketing.

Your comment actually just insults Sony, who would love to advertise Move in general.....if it was a success

Marketing on TV? Last time I saw a move commercial was like 2 years ago.

A kinect commercial? 3 months ago?

"Sony, who would love to advertise Move in general.....if it was a success"

What about the Vita it's not a success yet they are still advertising/pushing it?

Guess Wonderbook ads were mostly in the UK. Cause it was marketed.

Vita is kinda a big thing....a dedicated handheld. Move is a 2nd option, a accessory, to a self sustaining gamepad based console.

Oh ya.....totally the same thing.

We got the ads in Australia too. UK and Aus, surely the US got it too.

I will make breaks between each word for you.

Micro...soft..........is......expan...ding......multimedia....into the fore...front by...and intergrating....every......device usable...in your household. They might have a couple new games, but their real goal is to control your living room and mobile devices. Primary focus vs secondary, multimedia has always been Microsofts primary focus, but they had to prove themselves by showing games. Microsoft makes it look like they HAVE to make games not that they SHOULD.

While Nintendo is much better suited to making games for everyone, I think (if rumours are to be believed) MS will have a much stronger hook with their new system. I also think casuals are well served on their tablets and smartphones but they won't stop them from buying if the product/game is enticing enough.

I think I can safely say that Apple is the king of casual gaming at the moment.
