It doesn't know if it wants to be a games machine or a multimedia hub, casual or hardcore...etc. Microsoft will have a tough time balancing all of this out at the beginning of next-gen. IF they can pull it off though...they could be market leader. But who knows what Sony has planned. They'll attack that market as well. |
Why do you refer to it as an identity crisis? I'd argue trying to appeal to all markets has kept sales strong.

You can't do everything at once. Microsoft needs to market it as a games machine for the first year or so then move on to other things such as multi-media and Kinect. They need to focus on 1 main selling point and that should be the games IMO. Of course I'm not saying they should advertise other features, I'm saying they should get their priorities straight. My worst fear is consoles becoming PCs and so I dislike it when they are advertised as one.

The main focus for Xbox 360 has always been games. MS has advertised other features, but games were always the main focus. Its the games that really distinguish a platform and move hardware.
What does it matter if consoles become PCs? As long as there is competition publishers and developers will keep raising the bar when it comes to games and other features.

The primary focus of the Xbox is to be a multimedia hub connected to your phone, computer and tablet as one home hub. From the message Microsoft has been sending for the past three years is that games are an end they must meet to achieve their multimedia goals, so it will be met. Eventually they will take it seriously when the next console starts, but somewhere at the halfway point they will drop the ball completely for their multimedia aspirations.
|
If that's their primary goal than Sony and Nintendo need to step up their primary goals. Because MS doesn't appear to be any less focused on games than their competition.
I don't know what you mean by, "they will drop the ball completely for their multimedia aspirations." It just doesn't make sense considering their multimedia aspirations have already been successful thus far.

They will keep pushing to make sure they take Sonys thunder as the multimedia console. As Sony puts multimedia as a secondary to the games, the Xbox name has expanded into phones, and more.
