Wrpgs by far,the jrpgs I have played have never really hooked me. The one I've played the longest waslost odyssey, managed to grind my way to the fourth disk and gave up

lol Brain fart? Game was amazing. The best JRPG this gen to me aside from the Wii JRPG's from Xenoblade and Last Story.

I don't know why I haven't tried out Lost Odyssey yet. It's like the 360's ultimate JRPG. I've played the more elaborate exclusives like Magna Carta 2, but not the poster child for the genre on the console.

The art style looks a bit different but at least the gameplay seems solid turn based. I think I should give it a try.

Also can anyone explain to me why Zelda is considered an RPG? It seems more like an action/adventure/puzzle solving. It has no clear leveling up system or a classic RPG style battle system. Yeah you get more health and newer equipment, but still doesn't seem enough to classify it as RPG.

If Zelda is an RPG its classified as an Action RPG. You have your inventory to sort through, collect and control all the aspects you need to survive in the world you're in. Zelda is mostly an action adventure game, really. Its very light on the RPG and very strong on exploration, action and puzzle solving. It's RPG light at best, so if you want my opinion, then no, its RPG elements are not strong enough to classify it as an RPG.

I prefer action RPGs like Zelda, Fable, Kings of Amalure and since those are often regarded today as western style that's what I voted for. But I do like Japanese style RPGs as they have become known. My favorites are Panzer Dragoon Saga, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star IV and Skies of Arcadia. Mass Effect is my current favorite RPG series of any kind.

LOL Fable doesn't even deserve to be said in the same breath as Zelda or Kingdoms of Amalur. What a disappointment of a franchise, I wish Amalur had Fables bullshit hype and sales, because it deserves it more. I swear its far from a perfect world. The ending of Fable 2 still haunts me to this day and three was just...ugh.

What an increadibly rude and uncalled for post. Did anyone ask for your opinion of the Fable games? Do you just go around looking for beloved games to insult? Or do you just troll to troll?

Boy are you sensitive. Its not like I was giving you advice either as to whether you should throw it away,  but I saw two high calibur action RPG's and one that struggles to find identity in every aspect of its existence. This is a forum and replies will happen, if you don't like it then ignore it. I do it when I don't want to reply to things. Must everything be about trolling, rather than thinking it is a whole hearted response?  No wonder you guys always get people banned. Either you respond to the Fable part or your ignore it. This wasnt done to annoy you.

"You guys"

And what exactly would you be refering to?

Replyings will happen huh? Wow, no shit, thanks for the lesson on how forums work. For a guy claiming not to intend to annoy you sure don't have much tact. That little "sensitive" quip you started with doesn't come across as any kind of civil address.

Don't tell me how to respond to insult. Your post may reflect how you feel, but it certainly served no positive purpose. Since you think your opinion and advice have so much value I'll go ahead and return the favor. When you conisder replying either respond with respect or ignore it.

I guess I should take your last statement as the closest thing to an apology you seem capable of giving, even though it and everthing else you wrote is really a justification for being rude.

First on, the distinction probably make no sense. Back in the golden times of RPGs there was no distinction, as no JRPGs existed. They came into existence later and for some reason some people started to distinct between JRPG and WRPG. But what makes the difference? Is it only the country of origin? Because games like Pokemon or Xenoblade Chronicles have the classic qualities that are often attributed to WRPGs. So if the distinction is only made of the country of origin, then cannot be one chosen over the other. But if the distiction is made on the style and way to develop story or character, it means the JRPGs are the one with fixed storyline and character-development, that the player cannot change. That is great to develop cinematic gameplay. The WRPGs in this distiction focus more on explorable world and many option for the player to customize characters and/or story. In this case Xenoblade Chronicles and Pokemon are WRPG, additional to all the classical RPGs as Ultima, Wizardry, Might and Magic and so on. Also in both cases the best RPG of all time - Baldur's Gate - is a WRPG. So I have to chose WRPG.
But I really think you have to rethink this classification.

Pokemon and XenoBlade are very linear compared to games like FallOut and Mass Effect. In Pokemon you have to get 8 badges, in a specific order to finish the game. There is no free exploration, just party customization. XenoBlades is argueable, it blends the lines from WRPG and JRPG because it does play a lot like Dragon Age. However again, it's still linear, you got up the Bionis, then the Mechonis, you can't just fly to the head at the very start.

However I think the biggest distinction is art style and character development. In XenoBlade, Sharla becomes more independed, Reyn becomes less childish, and Shulk takes control of situations and becomes more of an Adult. In FallOut, your character never really changes. In Mass Effect, you can pursue a romantic relationship, but characters have fixed personalities. Miranda's a b***h, Jack is blood tirsty, Garrus is a leader, and all Krogans are high testosterone egotistical beings. Things happen which make them treat others differently, some races becomes more capable of co-existing with others through long term interactions on the Normandy, but they are still more or less the same people when they started.

Another great example is Lost Odyssey. The one non-imortal on your team (Jansen? I forget his name) starts off as a huge womanizer, sleeping with prostitutes, getting drunk, but at the end of the game he gets married and is very respectful towards women. You don't get this in WRPG's.

Also I mentioned Art style. WRPG's typically push greek mythologies, or  involves quests with kings, dragons and knights. JRPG's are generally more over the top outragious. Persona involves you shooting yourself in the head to enter a different dimension. FFVIII has gun/swords, and Clouds Sword in FFVII will separate your shoulder disks with only a couple swings. You don't get ridiculous stuff like that in WRPG's, unless it's heavily based on greek mythologies (Like Too Human), but then the science is always attempted to be justifieds (Nural implants, etc).

Do you intend to come off as a dick or is that just a hidden passive in 99% of your posts?

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

JRPG, Pokémon, do I need to say anything else?

I prefer the Japanese story telling and for that - jrpgs.

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

I enjoy both, but I prefer WRPGs a bit more simply because I think they mix up the genre and aesthetics up a bit more. It seems more often than not that western devs want to innovate the RPG experience, or at least change it up to the point where a unique experience is offered. Even toying with the JRPG formula. I walked away from games like Witcher, Mass Effect, and Costume Quest with a feeling that I just played a unique and wonderful RPG. The last time I honestly felt the way with a Japanese developed RPG was with the original Kingdom Hearts.
