Vita doesn't need to outsell 3DS to be successful.

You are right but when you okder platform, PSP, sells more than your current platform, Vita, by 3 to 1, I'm sure they aren't too pleased :(

SIGH.
Again, PSP got so much more support than the Vita last year, this year Vita seems to finally be getting the some great Japanese support. I fully expect Vita to start outselling the PSP within the next few months.

But it seems like the PSP this year is still getting more support than the Vita judging by amazon.co.jp pre-orders and game announcements :(

Btw, I got a Vita last week :) +1 sales for Vita was included by me, AC bundle. The screen is really crisp compared to my 3DS XL lol

Never said Vita is getting more support than PSP.

I said its getting SOME support. There are some pretty big IP coming to Vita this year.

Since the Media Create thread won't be up until Monday, I'll just post this here.

500K of the 2.3M Animal Crossing: New Leaf copies sold are downloads. 22% of all sales being downloads.

Iwata states, unable to hide his surprise, that 'For a game that costs 4800 yen to sell 500,000 copies without a discount because it is a download is quite an event.'

Japanese stores had these download codes that you could buy in-store. A majority of those downloads were actually purchased through retail.

IMO the barrier to entry for digital sales is convincing customers they don't need a physical copy of a game, not getting them to go online and buy it, so the distinction between eShop sale and download card sale is pretty irrelevant. Both cases are a digital sale -- that is, the customer does not purchase a physical cartridge. Download cards probably just work a lot better as gifts, and as a security measure, since a lot of people don't feel comfortable entering their credit/debit card information online.

January 24th - Demon Gaze & Monster Monpiece

January 31st - Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale

February 7th - Romance of Three Kingdoms 12

February 14th - Silent Hill: Book of Memories

February 28th - Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus; Phantasy Star Online 2 & Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus

March 7th - Soul Sacrifice & Tales Of Hearts R

March 14th - Steins;gate

March 21st - One Piece Pirate Warriors 2 & Dead or Alive 5 Plus

March 28th - Atelier Meruru Plus; Muramasa: Demon Blade; Photokano Kiss; Holy Sorcery Story

At first I thought this was really great for Vita... then I started looking into what these games are...

For starters, this is an actual screenshot from Demon Gaze, and Monster Monpiece is the game where you rub the touchscreens to remove womens' clothing.

...On second thought, these are just the sort of games the Vita needs in Japan! Godspeed, PSV.

When AKB can sell 400k in Japan and Photokano 100k, it's hard to under-estimate anything, really.

They aren't exactly games that the Vita needs, no doubt.  But they're better than the "nothing" that it had throughout most of 2012.

Now, wru Japan numbers.

~200k were eshop copies (bought digitally) while ~300k were download cards (bought in stores - practically no difference to buying the game itself in a store, and I heard the game was even sold out, which inflates this number).

Where do the cards lie then? Buying the card still means a purchase as buying a retail copy or purchasing it straight from the eShop. Some people buy cards to avoid putting money in their accounts, use of credit card, or they found a deal outside of a retail copy. A purchase is still a purchase as long as you spent money. You're really just buying a download code in the form of a card.
