Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo blocking 18+ rated Wii U eShop content at certain times

Legal age restriction requirements vary across a number of European countries. Since Nintendo of Europe is based in Germany, Nintendo eShop is complying with German youth protection regulation which therefore applies to all our European markets. Under German law, content rated 18+ must be made available only at night.
Therefore the accessibility of 18+ content in Nintendo eShop is limited to [USK: 22:00 UTC until 4:00 UTC] [PEGI: 23:00 UTC until 3:00 UTC].

No.

The law applies only to customers who reside in Germany. Nintendo could restrict the access only for german people and let the others view the content.

Actually, the german law does not seem to set a time when those games can be sold. If you have better information, a link would be nice to see.

Bloody Germany!

they should make it account restricted AND they could use a password (only 4 numbers) you have to type in if you want to use this content before 11pm. that's what as example sky germany is doing and i think it's a good solution.

I'm wondering, are laws in European countries about buying PEGI 18+ games for minors, or facilitating their purchase, different than in America? Could Nintendo be held legally liable if minors were using their online shop to get these games, with or without parental controls?

I'm just trying to puzzle this one out, and legal liability would be a good excuse...

well since the other services aren't doing anything like this I doubt it's a legal issue

are we sure about that?

i know that second one is old but it looks like ps3 allows parental control of content on the playstion store via esbr rating.  if nintendo hasn't figured out how to do that maybe this "time" thing is just a "good enough" fix to meet legal requirements.  it wouldn't be the first time in recent history nintendo has taken the "good enough" approach to things.

Lately Nintendo never misses an opportunity for disappointment.

parental controls are 100% fine imho. Sure it can be a annoyance to some but for parents it's a must. Especially since kids nowadays being so tech savvy. ( I swear I can't beat my niece in angry birds...she even purchases games from psn using my credit and she is still 4 years old lol..true story)

but I thought wiiu does have parental controls tho? So it shouldn't be a problem

That's only valid for TV channels that you can access for free.

You can buy nude magazines around the clock and they don't even have to be hidden in stores for example.

wiiU does have parental controls.  but, from what i'm reading in this thread, they apperantly don't extend to the e-shop.  on psn they do.  i'm going to go on a limb and expect on xlba they do as well.   if nintendo doesn't have that working yet this may very well be a short term fix they have to do.
