Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo blocking 18+ rated Wii U eShop content at certain times

And here we thought friend codes was the dumbest thing Nintendo could do. I totally get what they're trying to do, it's just they went about it in the dumbest most backwards way possible.

Do they not want digital distribution to succeed at all in Europe?

Nintendo of Europe blocks access to 18-rated content on the Wii U eShop at certain times of day, system messages suggest.

Users are unable to access trailers for 18-rated Wii U games or buy 18-related content.

The issue first came to light after a NeoGAF user experienced the issue and contacted Nintendo of Italy's customer support.

"Dear customer," a Nintendo representative replied, "we would like to let you know that Nintendo has always aimed to offer gameplay experiences suited to all age groups, observing carefully all the relevant regulations regarding content access that are present in the various European countries.

"We have thus decided to restrict the access to content which is unsuitable to minors (PEGI) to the 11pm - 3am time window."

Eurogamer has just tested this and it appears to be true. We were unable to access Assassin's Creed 3 information or buy ZombiU digitally.

"You cannot view this content," a message reads. "The times during which this content can be viewed have been restricted."

There messages appear for user accounts on which no parental controls have been set.

Eurogamer has contacted Nintendo for more information and will update when we hear back.

Well that is quite bad, you can't buy 18+ rated games from eshop before 23.00 or even view trailers. I bet a lot of working people will love this. Weren't those parental controls enough?

Do i understand this wrong?

If you actually go in and set your parental ratings instead of letting it be on default this problem is gone.

Correct me if I am wrong.

“If any creator has not played Mario, then they’re probably not a good creator. That’s something I can say with 100 percent confidence. Mario is, for game creators, the development bible.

Not a big deal but this is silly. What is the point in having console parental controls if they are not effective on all services the console offers.

Hopefully a smarter solution will be quickly put in place.

If this is only in Europe, then this isn't a decision made by the company as a whole. It would mean that this decision was made by NoE, and this is their "stupid" decision (not sure how stupid it really is, I think most of the people here are jumping into conclusions without knowing the other side).

If we do know the other side, someone please show it because I'm not seeing it here.

I know Europe has different standards for graphic depictions of violence but this does seem excessive when the system comes with parental controls.

What the fuck, I don't have children, why can't I download my DLC and games? This is absolutely insulting and incredibly stupid. Think of the millions of lost digital sales in the long run!

Looks like you're one of the few people who actually understands the situation.

There seems to be a pattern lately where things are misreported or misunderstood, causing outrage. Then the situation is clarified to be nowhere near as bad, and people go quiet until the cycle begins anew.

Nope, the parental controls have no effect on the E-Shop. This restriction goed with or without parental controls.

Did you set your age in your account settings? I don't have access to a WiiU to test the effects, but either way, this could still be a case of misreporting and overreaction.

I hope to God this is just a quick fix for the short-term, otherwise this is the dumbest thing that NoE has ever done... From getting 2 RPG Wii titles before the americans to this??? Say it isn't so, ol'chaps! :(
