I don't have a single friend who plays xbox tbh, all my mates went with the trusty playstation after the whole RROD thing back at launch.

That was done for the sole purpose of unification. SONY wants all of your accounts for the services under one roof. Playstation Network is just one part of that. SONY still cares a lot of about Playstation. Just look at Playstation Mobile, Playstation +, Life with Playstation, Playstation certified devices, and just look at the Vita's name. "Playstation Vita" literally means "Playstation Life".

I know what vita means, I had to learn Latin in school for more years than I ever wanted and vita is one of the first words you learn and one of the easiest to remember for the rest of your life. I find it strange anyway that on this website the meaning of vita has been explained several times by people at several occasions as if it ever needed explaining. It's not that this latin word ain't an obvious part of life-related terms like vitality, vitalise or vitamin. PS Vita is a strange name for a gaming device imo (but definitely not as strange as Wii U is or as PS Vitamin would've been). Vita meaning life ain't a proof that Sony will use the name Playstation forever. That's a funny reasoning. But anyway, so much for the PSV.
Like I said, It's just a feeling that both, Microsoft and Sony, despite the extensive use of their brand names might want to re-brand their gaming divisions at some point (and I think Sony could've already started with the PSV). I could be completely wrong though, and both companies are probably still perfectly fine with their well-known brand names.

Globally PS. The emerging economies will play a major role looking forward... should this same question be asked in about ten years. |
maybe going to far, the playstation 3 was the best selling console in NZ last year followed by the 360 and in 3rd was the psp. the psp is the most interesting as i thought that would well and truly be selling nothing. then again i live in NZ and the numbers are prolby a few hundred each anyway. Isnt canada sony land? they love japanese rpg's over there.
Xbox is hot in some area's and not so hot in others, playstation is known very well everywhere, xbox usually dominates the english speaking area's other then canada, australia and new zealand.
So playstation
Well, coming from me, a 33 year old who was a teenager during the PS1 era, I would say the Playstation simply because it has had two #1 consoles and the #1 selling console of all time. But, I think these days, "Xbox" is the generic term for video game console so, Idk.
Lots of people in denial, but its understandable. Its hard to admit something you grew up with, is just not as popular as it used to be, like Nintendo in late 90s/early 00s.
The big story was Nintendo's comeback, the underdogs back on top. But the underlying story of this gen, was how Microsoft basically castrated Sony. What a feat, to take over the biggest most significant, influential market. And, everybody knows Europe will follow shortly after. Microsoft will never need Japan. So...the question becomes, will Sony be SATISFIED being stuck in 3rd place? Its new territory for Sony, the company that came in dominating from the start, whooping on Nintendo. But Sony is not that cool brand anymore, and it all goes back to their electronics...too much competition, not as much quality. Microsoft's brand is much stronger than Sony or Playstation, the LOSING brand. bye bye walkman (they still make them sumbiches right?) hello ipod generation, this aint the 90s anymore for Sony.
All is not lost for Sony, however. Look at how Nintendo reestablished themselves in the market. Does Sony have GUTS to take some chances, whether its innovation or some 3D tech they can continue pushing? Time to separate themselves from Microsoft and have a unique option, passively encouraging consumers to have all 3 consoles rather than making a choice. Wii expanded the market, Sony may have to try the same, IF, they are not satisfied with their current position, which I'm afraid will be cemented as MS will continue growing. Nintendo, is back on untouchable ground, they are entrenched as the non threatening, family oriented , console for everybody.
What will Sony do? I think its VERY possible they bow out, sell their Playstation property, and put focus back on their core of developing and manufacturing top of the line electronics.

Considering sony sells more playstation consoles than microsoft by a landslide.. times 2.. the choice is quite clear..

yes PS is still the bigger brand vs 360 globally, but ninty shits on both.
