Forums - Gaming - What is the bigger brand: XBOX or Playstation

Outside of USA/UK/Mexico and a few other countries where Xbox leads over Playstation it's obviously Playstation that is the bigger brand. I think that is going to change in a couple of years because of the plans Microsoft has to expand the Xbox brand beyond console video games (Xbox Music, Xbox Games on PC, Xbox TV, Xbox Live Arcade Phone, etc).

Still playstation globally.

US and UK, xbox is becoming the name that people often use to describe the activity of gaming.

This.

This, The playstation brand has dominated - world wide for the last few years... although i do agree that xbox is on the increase it might be a different story by the end of next gen

Whoever finds that offensive, needs to grow up. I dont play that bs, I am a fan of all consoles, despite whichever one I favor most (nintendo).

You can't ignore the fact that the Playstation BRAND went from 150+ mil on ps2, to what will end up being basically half of that (75-80 mil), while Xbox BRAND tripled its userbase. That's a big swing.  A person above said it best, back in the day parents would say "play with their nintendo" then it was "playstation", now people say "Xbox" synonymously w/video games, IN AMERICA (the territory that matters most, by far).  I could a rats if people in Indonesia or some other  insignificant country are still stuck in the past that still associate with sony.  The U.S. are the trendsetters, and people follow shortly after. Xbox has closed the gap in Europe, and will continue that trend in the next gen. As i said, the Japanese are the ones that do their own thing (won't call them xenophobes) they will never embrace Microsoft, but it doesn't matter.   So unless Sony is satisfied being stuck in 3rd place (foreign territory for them) they will have to take some risks, TO ELEVATE THEIR WEAKENED BRAND.

No matter your spin, the PS brand has taken a major hit, is on the decline/downswing, while the Xbox brand is the polar opposite.

The thread asks which brand is bigger, now. Not which brand has seen the biggest increase/decrease.

I think Playstation brand is much much more important and known for the gaming market. Everyone knows what is a "Playstation" here, but the same can't be said about "Xbox".

In general, people tend to think in "Nintendo" and "Playstation" when it comes to videogames.

We need moar Zelda, now!

We need moar Unchartedzz!

We need less DLCs.

Considering sony sells more playstation consoles than microsoft by a landslide.. times 2.. the choice is quite clear..

Microsoft also sells more Xbox consoles than Sony. I also believe Sega sold more DreamCasts than PS2s.

I'm assuming these are just jokes as sony is in 3rd place?  Anyways, I think everybody can agree that XBOX is bigger in the big markets like America and the UK, but other countries Sony is bigger.  Makes them pretty even but will it stay that way?

Playstation consoles would include the PSV and PS3 and to a lesser extent their last gen systems which as still selling in some countries. So he's technically right. I was just poking fun at the loop holes in his wording.

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

Shall I use the Pespi/Coca-Cola analogy?

I'll answer your question with a question.

If 360 had launched a year after PS3, cost $200 more, been a bitch to program for, and lost almost all of its third party exclusives to PS3, do you think it would be within 2 million of PS3?

Of course not. The Xbox brand is NOT anywhere near the same strength as Playstation. PS3 did EVERYTHING IT COULD to lose this gen and is still going to end up ahead of Xbox. If they launch at the same price and make an easy to program for machine, PS4 will most likely severely outsell 720. People say Xbox has the US and UK locked down but PS2 dominated those regions (like every other region) and that didn't stop them from switching this gen.

When people see all the exclusives on PS3 they usually gawk and want to trade in their 360. I've already personally converted 3 people just by having them look at the lesser known titles (basically anything other than Uncharted and GT). It's advertising that is still killing Sony and they need a revamp of their marketing department. Get that competitive and they will crush Xbox next gen because everyone will know the superior games on PS3.
