Forums - Nintendo - Wii U: Miiverse will be 'a killer app', says Fils-Aime

As long as it uses Mii's I won't care about it.

They're seriously some of the ugliest things I've seen in a long time. They were amusing for about 10 minutes when the Wii came out but the novelty wore off quickly. Now anytime I see anything with a Mii heavily featured, I'm just reminded how bad it looks instead of how fun it is.

It's really fun to make them as ugly as possible.

Miis are great, i cant wait to try the thing, but i dont think it will be very popular

It all depends on how much time and resources Nintendo puts into it. Miis were cool when they debuted because they were new and different to the console world. But as twesterm said, they got old in a hurry. There was the Check Mii Out channel that Nintendo added not long into the Wii's life, but again, after 20 minutes of that, what more was there to do?

Yeah, you could get creative and make some outlandish characters or download amazing replicas of celebrities, anime and video game characters, but maybe about one to five percent of Wii owners did that. There was also the voting channel (can't think of the name off my head), but again, once you asked yourself, "Why am I doing this again?" and realized there was no point, you tucked it away and never thought about it again.

Nintendo could have sent updates to add things like new clothing, hairstyles and other little quirks, or had real awards and incentives for winning Check Mii Out contests or polling questions. But those things never happened, those channels stayed stagnant, and it got old real fast.

If Nintendo wants Miiverse to be relevant, it needs to show users that it will remain fresh, vibrant and updated. We need something different to look forward to constantly. And to begin it all, Nintendo needs to find a way to tell less  socially/technologically aware consumers, like grandpas and soccer moms, that it's their in the first place. I can't tell you the number of people I knew that owned a Wii and didn't even know it could go online...

I think Nintendo should have included a 500 points Wiishop card with every unit. It's not much, but it would have sent the message to every owner that there is more to the system than playing Wii sports. It would have raised awareness about the  Virtual Console and WiiWare and got more people trying those games out.

But I digressed. To reiterate my point, if Nintendo truly wants Miiverse to be a killer app, it has to push it to the moon instead of hyping it for a short while before dropping like it has done with so many peripherals or features of consoles past. Facebook wouldn't be the omnipresent behemoth of a social network that it is today if the people running it were content to sit on their laurels and play second fiddle to Myspace or remain static after that war was won.

I'm not yet convinced Nintendo has the focus to pull off something as huge as a full-blow social network, but I'd love to be wrong.

I just hope this doesn't backfire at them...

Can't backfire too much.  Sony didn't get an all out hit with Home but it still makes them money for the people that buy digital goods and stuff on it.  So about the worse thing that can happen is that it becomes a neglected option.  I expect more people to embrace this than they did with Home, but that isn't saying too much.

I'm not going to say me me me, rather I'm going to talk about them.

Okay, I am going to say me here and there, but I want to talk about those who are.

Me for instance, i don't care for social network.  But them, they, those, people who aren't me, millions of them do.  Nintendo certainly does have a killer app, but only if it sells.

Don't BS me and say that there aren't any of you who have friends or family or aquaintances or strangers that are way heavily into Facebook, Twitter, etc, etc.  Nintendo has something here, something like a neverending well of advertisement, bla, bla, bla.  I can't think of more right now, but think of facebook and twitter.  Now think of Facebook with their own games console.  Now think of facebook with a quarter of a century of game history.  Eventually Nintendo will go pass their own consoles and bring their miiverse to other devices.  And where does Miiverse end?  The mind is blown.  Or is it me that's blown.  Both.  Haha.

Anyways, where does Miiverse end?  Did Twitter ever die off?  Is facebook waning in popularity?  Sony will need to steal the social media idea for a game console from nintendo.

Friends, this smells to be like a trojan horse.  When it's in your home, no their home, it will be more than a console.  When its in other devices, Nintendo have already invaded.

"Killer app", more than killer murauders.

Not sure if core Nintendo fans will take to it. I still am in that crowd that believes that Nintendo and online are light years behind everyone else.

I suppose you don't care about the online improvements that they made with the 3DS.

I can't add nor chat with people I fight with in Street Fighter 4, or Mario Kart.

The improvements made on 3DS coming from the Wii are noticeable yes, but are still a far cry from what the PSVita offers.

If the Wii U doesn't come close to steam when it comes to communication, I don't know how they expect their online to take off.

This is bad news for forums like this one, if all future discussions and direct news info can be done directly in the device itself, why use a third-party forum?

Sony fans will once again run rampant on VGC due to the mass exodus of Nintendo fans to Miiverse.  First Swapnote and now Miiverse... Nintendo section on VGC is doomed!

@Twitter | Switch | Steam

That seems like a silly statement.  Sure Twitter and Facebook didn't wane in popularity but do you use Myspace anymore?
