Forums - Nintendo - Platinum: Without Nintendo, There Would Be No Bayonetta 2

Based on Inaba's comments, I assume that Bayonetta 2 could have existed with a different publisher, but Nintendo was probably the only one that could fit Platinum's vision for a sequel. In other words, I bet Nintendo was markedly more accommodating than the other publishers Platinum Games pitched to.

So it's confirmed now. Not that this will stop the hate, haters are immune to logic and reason.

I can't find the 'like' or 'thumbs-up' buttom for this comment.

That is one of the best statements I've heard in a long time. Can I put it on a shirt?

Thanks guys. :)

And by all means, feel free to put it on a shirt!

I'm calling BS on this. At worst Bayonetta 2 would not happen NOW, but it would happen eventually. Most likely they Sega shopped it around, took bidders, and Nintendo paid the most. Other backers probably didn't think such a niche title was worth it, and they are probably right.

I'm happy to see the series continue but it's not my type of game. I played the demo and didn't care for it. What I think is strange is that Platinum took Nintendo's money while knowing it would alienate almost all the fans of the original. Most with only a Wii never played the original and most with only a PS360 aren't going to buy a Wii U just for Bayonetta 2. It's weird and regardless of how Platinum spins it I think the game would have been funded and published as a multiplatform game eventually.

Yeah, honestly, I'm not buying it as an absolute, either.  They might have spoken with Ninteno first, or Nintendo might have made the best offer, but I cannot believe that a new IP that sold nearly 2 million copies would not have a sequel made eventually, especially since it sounds like the game was pretty much completed already.  It would have happened.  Someone else would have jumped on this.  I just think it never went down the ladder very far and that Nintendo snapped it up early.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this.  Obviously SEGA is getting theirs somehow, or they never would have agreed to let someone else publish.  Platinum will obviously see less sales with this move, so I'm inclined to think they insured that Nintendo would be taking most of the risk.  Nintendo would probably even be fine with it under-performing, as I think they're mainly doing this to have an adult game they can use for show-and-tell.

It's a bit of a shame, as I think the Bayonetta IP could have grown by a large margin had it been on all three systems.  As it is now, if Bayonetta 2 compares poorly against the sales of the first game, then this might be the death knell of the IP.

" death knell of the IP " ... LOL .. thats the spirit! ... never give up... even if bayonetta2 was already in its grave...  hiliarious!

some people just dont get it.. and continue to be in lalaland.. even when hard facts are presented..

LOL totally gonna enjoy the next time this happens.. butthurt so good

"Butthurt"?  What are you talking about?  I never even finished the first game, it didn't really interest me.  Your reply is kind of childish, don't you think?  I was simply being objective.  Did you even read my post?  Very strange reply, I don't know what to make of this kind of thing.  It is kind of amusing, though.

Regardless, I will try to clarify for you.  I think it's a shame that they couldn't get Bayonetta 2 on all three systems.  I think it would have sold a lot of copies.  However, being on one system might not mean enough sales to ensure the IP keeps going.  Nintendo probably has the rights to publish the sequel, so it's likely going to be up to them.  Can you understand my meaning now?

Regarding your last paragrapha, how is it that you would think a game published by either Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft would end up being a multi-platform game? Has that ever happened before?

I'm not sure what you mean.  I said that it's a shame it won't be multi-platform.  Had SEGA not bottomed out, it almost certainly would have been.

I'm sure could have found another publisher.

Oh, well,in that case, cut the game loose, Nintendo! Cleary Platinum could* have (and should have, of course!) found another publisher so that Team Entitlement would have less to cry about.

*And this is based on...gut feeling? Instinct? A cost-benefit analysis involving dev costs, marketing dollars, and the fact that Bayonetta 1 didn't blow up the charts? Inquiring minds would love to know the methodology involved at reaching this conclusion.

(Furthermore, do you think, perhaps, the franchise is *better off* on a brand-new platform where, with Nintendo pushing it, it might make a substantially larger splash? Maybe? I mean, it's at least as realistic as beliving that Platinum could have just gone off and found another publisher just like that *snap!* given the economics involved in trying to run an indy dev studio in the day and age of multi-gazillion dollar budgets.)

my only question is why SEGA didn't fund Bayonetta 2 as supposedly that's reason why Bayonetta 2 was cancelled, the game sold roughly 2 mil copies and got many positive reviews, did the game not make a profit?

LOL death of an IP?

Look at Final Fantasy when that shifted from Nintendo to Sony. It sure killed its sales. The fact it unlike the spoilt whinging kids these days, gamers of old moved to the platform their favourite game was on. Simple as that. If you are a true Bayonetta fan (GENRAL COMMENT TO ALL PEOPLE READING), then you will buy a WiiU, otherwise the game meant diddly squat to you in the first place.

SEGA's recent financial woes means they can't really afford to fund anything that isn't a guaranteed, sizable, seller, so it's possible that 2 mil copies (or what they assumed to sell on the sequel.after dev costs and marketing) wasn't a risk they can currently afford to take.

(I'm sure that it also didn't help that the whole Platinum deal was, for SEGA, almost assuredly a sizable money-loser, see: Vanquish, Mad World, and Anarchy Reigns, the last of which was an utter and complete bomb in Japan.)

Let me quote the first part of the sentence you bolded, because you seemed to have missed that.  It said "if Bayonetta 2 compares poorly against the sales of the first game."  I didn't say they WOULD, I said IF.  This is an unknown, we don't know how well the Bayonetta IP is going to do on a Nintendo console.  The first game did 2m on TWO consoles, and I suspect that Bayonetta 2 would have broken 3m had it been a 3-way multi-plat.

The Wii U defensiveness has gotten every bit as bad as the people who hate on it, perhaps worse. You can't speculate about a single thing about it unless it's completely flowers and unicorns.  This is getting crazy.  I didn't even say anything bad, for cat's sake, and would have just as many reservations if it was a 360 exclusive, and almost as many if it were a PS3 exclusive.  Either way, I think being on a single console might not give it enough sales for the IP to continue.  Even though it's not my cup of tea, I like seeing original IPs flourish and I hope it does just that.

Also, the whole "if you're a fan of Bayonetta then you'll buy a new $300 console" thing is kind of silly.  If that was the only thing they wanted a Wii U for, then they would have to be either rich or obsessive.  Better to just say it's the reality of the business and to just deal with it.  However, it IS completely reasonable for a person to express their displeasure to Platinum, that's what consumers are supposed to do, just as long as they do so in a mature way.
