Nintendo should

be more like Sony in gene... 35 19.55%

have at least one studio like Team Ico. 53 29.61%

not bother with the segment. 91 50.84%

Total:179

Uncharted aside (typical of sony, a company they had to BUY) i could not give a flying TOSS about ANY sony franchises............ Little Big Planet? no thanks, user created garbage has been around for decades, Gran turismo? sure, it was good once, but this gen theres far better racing games out there like PGR, NFS, Forza, Burnout etc.

FPS's? they are all second party anyway aint they? (the franchises that sony fans swear by as been the best of the best like killzone or resistance)

Nope......... no need for Nintendo to copy or take ANY inspiration from sony.

God of War? all about opinion on this one i guess........ but racking up 100+ hit combos by repeatedly pressing pretty much the same button hardly qualifies as skill to me, theres far better hack 'n' slashers out there like Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2, Onimusha 2, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta.

-Naughty Dog was purchased well before Uncharted was even thought of give Sony some credit on their vision. It was their vision as a company that made  Uncharted what it was or would you rather they just left Uncharted as a Lord of the Rings type fantasy game? Sony doesn't add companies to their team lightly and when they join they dont implode like Microsofts purchases because they mostly respect Sony andr d their decisions. Most of the companies were second party partners that Sony eventually purchased. InFamous 2 didnt sell as well as Sony would hoped but they still purchased Sucker Punch because Sony sees promise in their future as a gaming entity. If it was left up to Microsoft they would've scrapped InFamous, like they scrapped many other projects in the past. Sony has a fleet of known quality companies and a growing loyal core base because of it. You dont have to like them...and this gen might have been their worst in sales but showed they have more heart than Microsoft than Nintendo and Sony combined when it comes to publishing and creating games.

-I haven't heard very many Sony fans swearing by Killzone. But I havent heard anyone say the franchise sucked. I've heard that it is a quality game but it doesnt have the charm of Halo/COD. In truth...I wouldn't want it to. Kill has its own gritty feel like a major motion picture type action even in multiplayer. Great graphics and animations.

-God of War has taken hack n slash games to another level in story and gameplay. If you don't  to acknowledge that lets truly sad.

there is no need for further explanation. I understand your point, but I disagree.

Okay, then give me examples of games you find better or equal to SotC, Uncharted and GT. Go ahead.

The metric: That are classics that appeal to the older teen segment.

Baldur's Gate, Indiana Jones 4, Day of Tentacle, Duke Nukem 3D, One Must Fall: 2097.

3DS-FC: 4511-1768-7903 (Mii-Name: Mnementh), Nintendo-Network-ID: Mnementh, Switch: SW-7706-3819-9381 (Mnementh)

my greatest games: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

10 years greatest game event!

bets: [peak year] [+], [1], [2], [3], [4]

OMG Baldur's Gate!!! You sir have good taste.

@Pavolink: if they can't make games for everybody, why are they doing Bayonetta 2? That's a step in the right direction. And what about Golden eye and perfect dark back in the N64 days? They CAN do games for everybody. And take a look at Sony: they got Uncharted, GoW AND LBP, playstaion all-star and LBP karting. Sony does it all, why can't Nintendo?

Instead of saying "Nintendo can't" tell me WHY they can't.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I still don't get how people seem to miss the point of the OP!

how dare you say somebody makes better games than nintendo!!! just wait and see how people on this forum will tear you up for saying it! (even though its true)

That's you opinion, not fact.  Some people feel that Nintendo makes the best games, then some feel Microsoft makes the best games.  While you have every right to feel that Sony is the one, it's proven this generation that your opinion is not in the majority.  I own Uncharted 1 & 2 and did have 3, but have never finished any of them as I jusr couldn't get into them.  Personally, I like Nintendo 1st party games over any others.  Not saysing that I didn't enjoy playing Resistance and Halo, I just find as a whole, I enjoy Nintendo games more.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion....  As for me, I have all the systems and enjoy something on all of them.

Sorry I'm late to the party on this one.

A few thoughts.

1) First of all, I think there is a big danger here of confusing descriptive terms with normative ones. Many words that video game enthusiasts and critics use to describe games -- dark, mature, epic, cinematic, surreal -- are useful in describing a video game, but not useful in assigning value.

2) Moreover, and I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, I believe video games should be moving farther away from movies, not closing in on them. Video games are a unique medium, and I think the closer the industry moves toward Hollywood, the worse it is for both.

3) That being said, the games you mentioned are of course brilliant. Ico is in my opinion the finest PS2 game, and Shadow of the Colossus is in the top 5. Nintendo should borrow from those games because they are mechanically sound, emotionally powerful, and fun to play. Not because they're darker or more sinister, or even more cinematic or surreal than Nintendo's own IPs.

4) Lastly, I think we have to but a moratorium on the "Nintendo makes games for kids" canard. Nintendo makes games for everyone. Some are good, some are bad, some are the greatest games of all time.

Veknoid_Outcast, thanks for this post.

For point 1), like I mentioned to amp, I'm not exactly sure how to describe Shadow of the Colossus. It's such an impressive game and doesn't need to hinge on flashy colors and effect to get there, as compared to say God of War or Xenoblade (as far as I understand it). I don't know how to describe the silent nature of SotC, and the awe-inspiring nature of the immensity of its world (@Ronster. You need to play this game). As such it reminds me of moments in Ocarina of Time, like for instance the spirit Temple's immense idol, or the quietness of the "meadow" in the water temple. I don't know what the word is that describes these, but it's filmatographical in nature (is that the word), yet it isn't hollywoodian. Ah, I fail at this, should've studied cinematography. :P This should help better show how I agree with your point 2). I'm also not for Hollywood myself and prefer international movies in general, or a GOOD american movie like Donnie Darko, American Beauty, Dances with Wolves and more quiet movies like that.

3) I didn't know how to word it, so whatever you see in those games that make them pinnacle, that's what Nintendo should borrow, at least in a handful of their games. They were able to do it before, they can now if they try harder or hire professionals who can help them get there. Iwata mentioned somewhere that he wanted to make deeper experiences for older ages (can't find the link). This would be the way.

4) When TP came out, Nintendo tried to make what OP asks for, but they weren't able to 100% like SotC did. For the moment they fall short. So, though the phrase may be a canard, it holds alot of truth. True, it's a generalization, but games that apply for all ages are rare. These would be Wii Sports, Endless Ocean and a few other simulator-style games. The others that are family-friendly are not for all ages, as they contain content that does not cater to the segment in OP. So bar a few exceptions that yet also don't cater to the segment in OP (Wii Sports and Endless Ocean), in general the canard holds a powerful truth: that Nintendo is not catering to the segment in OP. And in general, that means Nintendo is doing bad, as far as the segment is concerned. That's why it can't dominate its generation just yet.

The idea that they could switch their output to include games like that as well as what they're already doing incredibly easily is a little hollow, especially given the development time required for some of those games. Team Ico haven't released a game for 7 years (and their next is still TBA), and GT5 was in development for a hell of a long time.

Do we not remember the last couple of years of the Wii? The burden of them being the only company actually supporting the console for several years finally came back to haunt them, and Skyward Sword in particular suffered from such a long development cycle.

Basically, they don't have the manpower to do both, whether you think they should or not.

I never said it was easy, please quote me where I said that.

But I mostly agree with the man-power required to make games of such grandure. However, SotC was a minimalistic game yet still conveyed that sense of awe. I believe there are work arounds to the constraints you bring to the table, as valid as they are.
