Forums - Nintendo - Wii U's GPGPU Squashes Xbox 360, PS3; Capable Of DirectX 11 Equivalent Graphics

This is a bit silly. Everyone expects the GPU (and the CPU) for the Wii U to be greater than the current gen consoles. This is hardly surprising - after all we knw the ps3 GPU currently isnt great and it wouldnt take much to surpass it.I mean seriously, if the specs werent greater then Nintendo could hardly say that this was a next-gen console. Speaking logically the Wii U had to have specs greater than the ps3 or xbox and anyone with sense would have thought the same.

However, this isnt the true test of the Wii U's capabilities. That will come with the next xbox and ps4 release. The important thing is not how the Wii U compares with current gen consoles but how it compares with the next gen consoles.

Who really cares. 720/PS4 are going to be more powerful and probably push Sony/MS to lose a fair amount/unit upfront and release a year later.

If Wii U has a solid GPU that's great for games like Mario Universe, Bayonetta 2, Retro's future IP, Donkey Kong Country Returns 2, Zombi U-2 (heh), etc.

A lot of devs simply aren't going to have the money to push the PS4/720, for a lot of devs Wii U will be decent enough I think.

The specs that Nintendo released makes the Wii U to be the PS2 vs GCN or original Xbox for the upcoming console wars.  The very least the Wii U would be comparable to the DC vs PS2(720 and PS4); which I would have wanted to see how far Sega could have pushed the system if it did stay for the system wars. In any case the PS4 and 720, will once again be sold for a loss compared to a profit like the Wii U.

Im not sure sure the ps4 will be sold at a loss. I dont think sony would be able to afford that, and they have already mentioned that the ps4 wont be as big a leap forward as the ps3. I suspect they will go with something a bit similar to the psv which may not be loosing money (or much) but is also not making that much money.

True...but I'd be surprised if they were to make it less powerful than the Wii U.

For an underpowered system it's quite expensive and that's thanks to the control pad.

How is it expensive? Here in Australia at least the WiiU is launch below what the PS3 costs atm and that is after 6 years on the market. So unless Sony does a price cut here, the WiiU will be cheaper.

Lucky you. In the UK the prices are as follows-

Wii U 32GB roughly £300

PS3 320GB around £200

Xbox 360 250 GB under £180

wow 200 aint bad for a PS3. I still don't get why such a huge difference  to AUS pS3 prices ($448 for 320gb model). I bet Sony and Microsoft kept their price up only because they did nto see the Wii as competition here.

I am sure with the new model there will be a price cut in Aus at least jsu tbefore Wii U launch.

That's not a good comparison to compare a current gen against a next gen console.

Check out Burnout Revenge-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX60S6bju_E&hd=1 Xbox and PS2 versions. Current gen at the time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90CdPPPsF6s&hd=1 - Xbox 360 version. Next gen at the time.

As you can see the 360 version looks far superior. If the Wii U was trully 'next gen' the it should be able to wipe the floor with the 360 and PS3 with no excuses. Truth of the matter is Nintendo has hedged it's bet on the controller again however this time around the control pad is an expensive peripheral and in order to keep costs down they've had to skimp on the Wii U innards. Even so the launch price of the Wii U is noticebly more than that of the Wii. Personally I don't mind too much as finally I get to play Nintendo games in glorious HD without having to mess about with PCs but my issue at the moment is price. For an underpowered system it's quite expensive and that's thanks to the control pad.

Something that I didn't think about when I made that post (glad I understand it now) it's that the PS2, Xbox and GC games were in SD, while the 360 and PS3 are in HD. Like other users have said the difference in very noticeable in some games (but it really depends in which ones you are trying to compare, some of them looked almost exactly the same).

But now that all games are in HD those differences will be harder to notice with each passing gen, you can still argue about games like Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313, but I'm pretty confident the Wii U can run those games (maybe not at the same level as the demos but still be able to play them quite nicely), or I can be dead wrong on this one, but it really doesn't matter to me since I have a PC where I can play those games.

The comment about the jump from SD to HD is a good point to make but I can also make out other differences such as better textures, particle effects and other post processing effects. If it was simply an upscale job from SD to HD then it wouldn't look like that much of a step up. Furthermore the jump to HD takes extra CPU/GPU grunt.

Which leads me to my other point. On the flip side to the SD to HD argument I could say the Wii U doesn't have to worry about pixel increase so can just concentrate on everything else. So far there's been no evidence of that. I am looking forward to Bayonetta 2, see what PG can pull off. Also just want to repeat that I'm not that bothered about it being underpowered as I can finally get to play Ninty games in HD with AA etc.

Ill still be waiting for ps4, Nintendo are always playing catch up when it comes to graphics.
