Did you actually read Viper's YEN based costs for next-gen? A PS4 cannot be more than 10k over the Wii U without creating a scenario where they are $600 in NA/EU. With that in mind, there is no way Sony will have the tech that will be greatly more powerful than what Wii U already has with only a year difference between launches.

Wii U will be able to have 100% of the same games and game quality as its competitors.

All three next-gen are probably going to be considered around 5-8x more powerful than current gen vs the massive jump from PS2 to PS3.

Huh. Nothing here is grounded in reality. Wii U will be able to 100% of the same games? How so?

current PC GPUs are at least 24x more powerful than the one in the 360, so even if it's 5x-8x more powerful after 7 years, would you really be surprised? I still say the primary bottleneck is the RAM usage, IMO anyways.

Not really.   Broadway was PowerPC.   Wii U is Power7.

The PowerPC 750 CL that Broadway was based on wouldn't really work well in a multicore set up anyway.

It has to be "equivlant" because only Microsoft can use DirectX. The PS3 also utilizes DirectX9 requivalent, and the PS4 will utilize DirectX11 equivolent. Unless Nintendo wants to license it from MS, they can't use DirectX.

The cost of a monumental leap that you guys might be expecting just doesn't make sense from an economic standpoint.  Sure, if Sony wants to release another $599.99, cutting-edge box with even higher entry dev costs, they can go right ahead...  I don't think they can go too crazy with their usual razor and blades strategy - even though you're rich pezus and would be able to afford it, you can't support Sony all by yourself!  My guess is that the PS4 & 360 won't be the quantum leap you all are expecting, and when you guys find that out, suddenly marginal leaps won't be such a bad thing like it is with the Wii U.  :)

I'm not a technophile to that extent, so I don't oogle over new engines and the like if that's what you mean.

But a quantum leap would still be an expensive box, with or without a Blu-Ray drive. But it doesn't matter.  No way we can continue this convo until we know what MS and Sony are doing.  So we'll revisit this conversation again in the near future.

A tower, yes, but not a laptop.  Form factor of the WiiU has much more in common with a laptop than it does with a desktop.  TDP requirements as well.  And that isn't the point I'm making.  I'm not saying you couldn't get a PC with more power than a WiiU for under 1000 dollars.  I'm saying you can't get a gaming laptop that will blow the WiiU away without dropping over 1000 dollars.  More Like 1500.  That is the kind of leap that would have to be made by PS4 or Xbox in order to massively dwarf the capabilities of the WiiU this generation.

It's not the same to cool a hot GPU and a hot CPU on a PC tower with lots of air and fans to move that air out of the case, than trying to do that on a console where case dimensions are much reduced, high rpm fans can't be used due to being too noisy and airflow is very restricted.

Just what happens on a laptop.

Also, TDP is very similar, and related.  You want low TDP chips in your console to keep it cool and quiet, just like your laptop.  And also just like your laptop, components cost a premium to get that low TDP.  If you want to compare performance cost in a home console with a TDP of 200w max, you need to see what laptop components would cost to get a fair idea.  Home consoles have more in common with Laptops than desktops.  Desktops get their power at a 600W plus cost.

but this is only if you have quadsli or rly old gpu for sli ...

gtx 680 with i7 2600k uses 300w max.

If you use ati you can get away with 200-250w.
