Forums - Nintendo - Wii U's GPGPU Squashes Xbox 360, PS3; Capable Of DirectX 11 Equivalent Graphics

Pezus
it makes sense because its a launch game and resources are limited
also, while Xbox 360 launch games did show some improvement, like shaders and poly count, they werent really noticeable at SD, actually if you play early Xbox360 games on a tube TV with the standard cable today (ive done it), you will be asking yourself when did your Xbox360 turned into a Wii

Of course Wii U is going to be more powerful, its much newer hardware. But as someone who has played the console I havent seen it do anything the PS360 cant do. Im sure its capable of more but as of now developers havent taken advantage of the hardware.

What I dont understand are the people who think Durango and Orbis wont be giant leaps over current gen. Because they will be MASSIVE jumps

Because of the many many economic and situational reasons talked about in many many threads like this one and PS4 cutting edge thread.  It does not make any sense whatsoever for there to be this huge leap like last time.  You're going to be disappointed if you don't face that reality.  The amount of horsepower that would have to be included in those consoles to get the same kind of leap we got from PS2 to PS3 would make the consoles prohibitively expensive due to the law of diminishing returns.  We're talking 1000 dollar consoles here.  It isn't going to happen.

That isn't even true.........have you ever built a gaming PC?

I don't understand where this idea that to make a console even 5x more powerful than current gen is crazy expensive.  Its not at all.  The tech in the current consoles is so outdated it isn't even funny.  And nextbox doesn't even come out for another 1 -2 years anyways and costs will be even lower.

You and others who are hoping Wii U is on par with other next-gen consoles need to face the reality that were preparing for another giant leap, not just the tiny step from a technical point of view were seeing with Wii U.

His direct quote is clearly trying to not break any NDAs. Basically, it comes down to this.

Wii U is a next-gen console through and through. It can clearly blow away PS360, however, it will require a game from Retro or a ground up 3rd party Wii U/next-gen game to really show it off.

Wii U can support all the modern tech.

Most people don't know the roadmap is why, it falls in line with PC GPU releases, which currently, the big jump will be in 2014, that's 2 years away, if either the Durango or the Orbis releases before that time, it won't be a big leap, we'll have to wait and see for now.

Screenshot comparisons vs. Xbox games show obvious improvements though, even the launch games. Same with PS3, it was an obvious jump

I would say that is open to some debate ...

If you were to take the best looking XBox games (Black for example) and do a comparison against the XBox 360 launch line-up the XBox 360 games would only look a bit better. This isn't an unusual problem for systems released before their competition because developers are often producing games on a tight budget with a strict deadline while working on hardware they don't fully understand while using tools that have yet to be updated; and their games are being compared against the bigest budget games of the previous generation that were developed by the best teams with long development timelines on mature tools by programmers who have been working on the platform for many years (and fully understand it).

Even so, only looking at cross generation multiplatform games (Xbox and 360 games like Call of Duty 3) the difference is obvious. I'd expect the same for next cross-gen launch games as well, but we're not seeing it from the Wii U.

You mean games like Gun?

Call of Duty 3 demonstrated dramatic improvements because it was built from the ground up for the XBox 360, PS3 and PC using more mature tools that were updated after Call of Duty 2 was already under development.

But like I and others said in that other thread, there's no need for a $599 PS4 for the leap to be substantial.

1. No expensive blu-ray drive this time around

2. It's coming at least 7 years after PS3 came out (8 years for 720 vs. 360). As a comparison, PS3 came 6 years after the PS2 and 360 came ~4 years after Xbox. People tend to forget this point.

3. Do you know how much tech has advanced in these years?

Did you actually read Viper's YEN based costs for next-gen? A PS4 cannot be more than 10k over the Wii U without creating a scenario where they are $600 in NA/EU. With that in mind, there is no way Sony will have the tech that will be greatly more powerful than what Wii U already has with only a year difference between launches.

Wii U will be able to have 100% of the same games and game quality as its competitors.

All three next-gen are probably going to be considered around 5-8x more powerful than current gen vs the massive jump from PS2 to PS3.

We know GPGPU is powerful, but what about the CPU? Could it be real for it to be a 3-Broadway (Wii) with some watson features/caracteristics?

Durango and Orbis will be out next year and even if one slipped to 2014, it would still NOT be using that new 2014 tech. So in reality it won't matter and is a baseless point. Wii U is on par with anything Durango/Orbis is doing. Its just sad Retro or someone else couldn't of had a game ready for launch that really demonstrates this power. MS and Sony won't make that mistake and they didn't with their current gen consoles. Nintendo should of had something to prove the point right off the launch.

i remember when i walked around my cars in project gotham racing 3, i had an xbox before but one is for sure, it blew me away.

Exactly what I was thinking. That game was more than a small leap in graphics and still a nice game to look at today.

The track record was pretty good with the 360(pretty much using the latest GPU tech from 2005, just the weaker version) so we'll see if they decide to release the next installment in 2014 with the same idea. If it is, then it will be a pretty big jump, if they don't want to wait, then they are not going to be much more powerful than the Wii U if they also want to go tablet controller route.
