That's a beautiful video of DiRT 3 and while the rain does the game justice, the individual graphics do not best Crysis. To top it all off, that's an apples-to-oranges comparison.

I do agree with your apple and oranges :P crysis is without a doubt the best looking shooter ever made, I wont try and argue against that.

The orignal crysis was a risk game, something that never happened before and will never happen again, a studio took a stab at the industry and said look what you can do if you actually try and use what you've got. The problem is that from a consumer point of view only 2% on the game buying public owned a computer that could actually play it at those settings, the rest of us just got to drool at videos (funny that were still doing that nearly 6 years later).

Crytec learned from this and now play it safe with their games, which is why we get crysis 2 and 3 at a lower graphical level, it will be at least 2 years before we see a game truely beat crysis on every level.  :)

I think the next Half-Life might surprise you

To be honest pez, I really hope it does, although Iv never played a half life in my life, so the entire experience wil be new for me :)

Just a nice person :)

Very interesting. Putting what you're saying with what scoobes is saying, and in light of OP, what would stop a developer from using a game and modding it to make a next gen game a little later (say 3 to 5 years later)? What if Crysis 2 was a modded version of Crysis, like one of the vids we saw?

If Crysis can look like what we saw in those videos after what 4 or 5 years, what's stopping a company from modding their own games, and basing their next games off of a top quality foundation game? (and therefore saving money)

A different question, how did Crysis 2 break what was better before, and how is making Crysis 2 different than modding? This is a fascinating thought to me.

The answer to most of these questions is money.

Well, some stuff is hard to do with modding only; like cutscenes, voice work, creating new characters etc.

Oh, okay, that makes sense. So modding is a way to alter what is in the game, but not a way to add characters into a game, or add storyline bits into a game, or change the flow of dialogue I'm guessing.

Because otherwise I was thinking they could monetize the mods as extension packs.

Depending on the game you can basiacally mod anything in the game. And some mods have been monatised, Counter Strike would probably be the best example as that started out as a mod. Then you have things like Gary's mod, killing floor, Team Fortress etc.

more to add to my previous point, this is what crytek were able to achieve in the 3 years from farcry to crysis

This is the advancement we have seen in the 4 years from crysis to crysis 2

just such a crying shame.

It is a shame but the DX11 pack they released certainly improves matters for Crysis 2. Having tesellation makes a world of difference but I'd like to see them make a game from the ground up with DX11 in mind rather than just patching it in.

I guess the original Crysis still looks so good because it wasn't developed with consoles in mind. As soon as Cryengine3 will be "free" from X360 and Ps3 you'll see a consistent graphical leap.

It wasn't the best looking game then, it isn't now. Maybe the modded version is.

It was easily the best looking game in 2007 (not sure what else you could say looked better). Today it has runs for its money, but with the mods, I still don't feel it's topped.

Yes you're right, I got release dates screwed up in my head.  Metal Gear didn't even come out (Not saying MGS 4 looks better).

There's some scenes at the end of crysis 2.The one where land/rock crumbles and everything at the end that dropped my draw more than anything in a videogame ever.

The textures are a bit better in Crysis 1, but imo not really until super high resolution if you use the texture pack for C2. Also Crysis 2 runs better atleast on my system. So on my 560 Ti, I7@4ghz, I think crysis 2 looks better at the max my system can do. However if you have the super super computer, Crysis/warhead will look better.

The original crysis is way more impressive, because of how open it is. The more varied landscape, etc.
I like all 3, but, I like crysis warhead and crysis 2... The first half of crysis is great, but the aliens and flying are kind of bleh to me.

same here!

Although its been commonly accepted that Crysis 2 is visually better than 1...the way the game is designed is a step back compared to the first one that makes all of the visual gains of the second seem less impactful.

I actually see and hear it the other way around from plenty of people. I can tell you that Crysis 2 was a universally accepted let-down for many people, however (pre-hi-res texture pack, that is).

Initially it was...but after the major update it really got back some of the recognition it had lost. Once that released a lot of the tech gurus from magazines and websites clearly stated that crysis 2 had the edge.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

Watching the youtube video kinda makes the graphics seem a little better than they really are...well at least for me. Because its on youtube, your mind tells you that the real thing will look crisper. That is not true. I've ran this mod on my computer and it looks pretty much exactly how it looks in the video. Very blurry, dark, and hard to see. I cannot play a game that looks like this. It's still impressive, but not as much as this video would lead you to believe.

Sbdy as a link to these mods ?

Oh btw, has anybody seen Hard Reset (now in extended edition) in motion ?

just such a crying shame.

Is that Crysis 2 shot from the console version? Zoom in and it looks really jagged and blurry. I am going to try Crysis 2 out with the HD texture pack and DX11 today because I think I only played it in DX9.

It does look pretty bad. The DX11 version with the higher res textures is far more impressive, especially with tessellation enabled.
