Forums - Gaming - The 40 Games in 40 Years that Changed the World

Problems:

-The Path - Sure, I own it, but how on earth did it change the world?
-Passage - it did ABSOLUTELY nothing to change ANYTHING! It has also zero critical acclaim, and was just a nifty five-minute trek through a really fast story. Woohoo.
-Goldeneye 007 - isn't there. That's a mistake.
-Minecraft - Don't get me wrong, it's a big deal. But I think it should be switched with:
-Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-World of Warcraft - HATE the game, but I can't deny its importance in gaming.

Zelda has existed fora very long tme, but Minecraft has yet to 'old'.

Minecraft has already inspired Bethesda and Epic Games and others in one way or another and MC is not evenout of its prime yet.

Edit:

You also have to take in to account how small Minecraft was compared to Zelda when MC stormed the internet.

Yay!!!

I have probably played more Minecraft than any other person on this site. I have been playing since its alpha days, and I have authored more than a few incredibly popular texture packs totaling over 40,000 total downloads. I have built cities, castles, fortresses, colossal pixel art sculptures, and fanciful redstone machinery. I am extremely aware of what impact MC has had.

Ocarina of Time was absolutely more important.

Really? Wow.. respect.

Yay!!!

To be fair, it's quite easy to get a texture pack that popular. Just make something that looks halfway decent, then market the shit out of it and keep it updated.

The "keeping it updated" part is why I don't have more downloads. I can't be bothered to keep up with the MC update schedule, especially since texture pack authoring has gotten more and more complicated since they keep on changing things on us.

But Half-Life didn't really invent anything new either. It simply mastered every aspect of what it tried to do much like Uncharted 2.

And if Half-Life made the list then why not Call of Duty 4?

Half-Life influenced the games industry in terms of story, or rather how to tell a story in a FPS. People actually stopped to talk to you, give you directions and open doors for you. Most games still relied upon cut scenes whereas Half-Life stuck to the First-Person perspective and allowed the story to unfold in real-time with you in complete control. Look at other single-player FPS games before it and then single-player games afterwards. It had a huge influence on every campaign mode in every FPS after it... even Call of Duty 4 .

It's also the game that helped introduced Counterstrike to the world and made Valve the company they are today. Without the success of Half-Life, Steam wouldn't exist and Valve wouldn't be the influential company they are now.

Although Call of Duty has clearly had a much greater impact on the actual world than Half Life. Half Life was only a precurser, and much less world changing than its predecessor Goldeneye 007.

In what ways?

Goldeneye 007 and Call of Duty brought legions of people into gaming, and into enjoying the FPS genre; these two games made an impact on the world outside of the gaming fanbase which changed the overall appeal and image of gaming. The change that Half Life caused was localized to people who were not only gamers, but already FPS fans.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

No Call of Duty 4? Pretty much ever FPS since that came out has in some way taken elements from it.

agree with the entries, but the order is all fucked up

I LOVE ICELAND!

I'd say the orders messed up and half of the list shouldn't be there ;)

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

How did Call of Duty and Goldeneye have an impact outside gamers and FPS fans? Huge marketing campaigns?
