39. The Secret of: Monkey Island (Dev: Lucasarts, Pub: Lucasarts, Y: 1990)

I always see this ^ but do not understand the reasoning for it. Anyone know why?

37. ET: the Extra-Terrestrial (Dev: Atari, Pub: Atari, Y: 1982)

Wasn't this the game that killed Atari? It definintely changed the world if it  did.

31. The Path (Dev: Tale of Tales, Pub: Tale of Tales, Y: 2009)

Why?

30. Passage (Dev: Jason Rohrer, Pub: Jason Rohrer, Y: 2007)

What is it?

29. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Dev: Nintendo, Pub: Nintendo, Y: 1998)

Big Agree

18. Parappa the Rapper (Dev: NanaOn-Sha, Pub: Sony, Y: 1996)

Annoyingly yes.

13. Quake (Dev: Id Software, Pub: GT Interactive, Y: 1996)

Missing goldeneye. I feel that had much more impact on FPS.

3. Doom (Dev: Id Software, Pub: Apogee, Y: 1993)

See Goldeneye note above.

Post above.

Yeah, ET was the game that not only destroyed Atari, but also brought on the VG crash - so I understand why it's there :P

There's quite a few indie titles here that I don't really understand...

They don't say if the games changed the world for better or for worse, so I'd agree with most of the games in that list.

But yeah, where are Dune II, Wolfenstein 3D, why is Final Fantasy IV in that list instead of Dragon Quest (first JRPG) and... PaRappa the Rapper?  Mr Bones mixed music and rythm before in a minigame.

And what are Ico's contributions to gaming?

Edit - I miss Civilization in that list...

Yeah, Civ really should have made it on the list! awesome game. Dragon Quest is featured in the FFIV article as a predecessor to that game

Ah didn't notice that.  Much love to Civ series.  I hope they make the A.I. a lot better for the next one.  Seems like A.I. has always dragged the series down a little.  Usually, the harder difficult settings just means the computer "cheats" more (trades freely with each other, more units at start, on top of the more upset citizens).  The A.I. has surprised me a few times in my Civ games but usually they can be pretty predictable.  Also, loyalty means nothing to the A.I.  Most backstabbing piece of shits that don't give a shit about you.  In Civ 5 I just expect almost everyone to hate me because usually they start denouncing you almost every turn.  Gets to the point where I don't even care about diplomacy.

Uncharted 2 should've been in the Top 3. Such an amazing game that influenced so many games.

ET was certainly influential. A game that almost single-handedly killed the console business.

It's like a "Hitler is man of the year" thing. If influence is your only metric.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

They're arguing that Dragon's Lair paved the way for UC (and ME and Heavy Rain)

What did Final Fantasy IV? It wasn't the first JRPG published outside Japan and it didn't make the genre popular outside Japan...

In Master of Magic the A.I. cheats even more, it doesn't have to pay mana for summoned units. Sometimes the A.I. have summoned so many that I can't create my own units.

A pretentious list. As expected from a magazine like Level.

They seem to have most of the right games, but the order doesn't make much sense. It's good to give Pong and SMB the first two places, but others like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Tetris... Those are the ones that are really synonymous with the word game to the same extent. Doom, Zelda, GTA, etc. are significantly below that standard and shouldn't be so high up on the list.
Also, while I hate to say it, a lot of those games really aren't that important. No matter how much the miniscule number of core gamers may like it, you can't seriously say a game "changed the world" if it did not sell a very significant amount and attract a lot of attention in general.
Finally, I can't believe Sonic isn't on there. It was a hell lot more important in its time than most of the games on there.
