Forums - Sales - Updated: Global Hardware and software UP! (28th July '12) - 3DS dominates, Vita falters

WTF? I thought Sony was doing bundles that included a Vita, game, and memory card. But, this current photo of the Madden 13 (or 12.5) bundle shows it's just the system and game. What happened?

The PSP sold at $250 and sold a lot better than the PSV in the same time scale.

I guess it's not working anymore, what could have changed since then I wonder. Last time I checked the PSV has "the best launch line up of any system" (read that in another article).

3DS slashed it's price drastically and got a lot of great software.

What was the PSP's competitor doing when it lauched? Well a launched a month later.

What did the PSP have in its launch window, I'd be hard-pressed to find it had that many "more games".

The PSV, simply put, does not have the momentum the PS brand had when the PSP came out. It also is face to face with a much more aggressive Nintendo (slashing the price down 80$ is insanely aggressive)

yes PS's momentum was also a factor, something I alwasy forget.

The answers are right in front of us.

Point is that it doesn't need a price cut yet, and I've explained why in an earlier post in this thread. If you wanna know why, you've got some digging to do happyd, because I have like 3 blue quote thingies to address in my buddy so I'm not searching for you ;P

;)

Okay, @bold. Not much in your post proves your point. On the contrary, you support my argument that the PSV is faced with a much stronger competitor than last time (the DS did nothing and launched at the same time).

I don't know what I have to dig but I'll go over your ISO now...

You talking about time will tell if games will sell and then only should Sony seek a price cut (if games don't sell).

"Oh and Bioshock will release next year. It seems set for the next year and half, it's sales across that time period will make publishers decide whether or not to publish another Vita title. And if major publishers decide not to, a price cut will be needed."

You saying that bundles are key, and only if they don't work is a price cut needed. You mention that the Vita only needs to double its weekly sales. Will that allow it to reach PSP levels? I haven't seen the math post if you have it.

Nope, software and bundles will take the average sales each week up. If they don't that is when a price cut is "needed." It doesn't need to match the 3DS in sales, it just needs to do double what it's doing now per week

You mentioning that a pricecut is not good for profit, and rightly so.

Sony seems to be just about breaking even on each unit, or taking a small loss, why take an even bigger loss on each one when there's clearly a lot of software coming down the line that has big selling potential (for the software itself, that makes money, and the system)?

And now to where we are:

The PSP sold at $250 and sold a lot better than the PSV in the same time scale.

So now that I copy-pasted all you wrote, stuff I had already read by the way, what about your reasons for a price-cut not being needed relates to what I was saying, that the PSP is not performing as well as the Vita?

EDIT: I meant ^ "that the Vita is not performing as well as the PSP was".

Its not going to go back to that, remember how devs and publishers hated having to deal with Ninty in the past because of their crazy demands. But they had to deal wiht them because they were the only game in town. Same thing to a lesser extent with SOny. Publishers like to have multiple systems out their because that means they have more leverage, hell this gen alone SOny and MS were tripping over themselves to give money to these guys just to get exclusive DLC and some timed crap. Not even full on games, that never happened in the past, because there wa always a dominator and that dominator could set the standard

It was like that since the NES days, you'd think they would fix it by the time the PS2 came along, especially when a 3rd, neutral competitor enters the market. I disagree, Oni. You can say things have changed, but you can't say it's because of the dominator effect since that's existed a long time ago and alternatives to it were offered, but they were not taken (especially with the PS2 and the DS).

Just for the sake of argument, ill say your right, but that doesnt matter, the end result is the same things have changed, and i dont see it ever going back to NES or even PS2 level, ever. That doesnt really benefit devs

Okay. I would be prone to say you could be right and to me it can go both ways. Let's just not use history to support our opinions since this has never happened before this gen ;)

uhh... I have no idea where we are or what we're talking about. I dunno, why were we talking about PSP?  I'm sorry man, I don't know where we're at, I wrote that at 1am. I'll read through my posts again and give you a more coherent answer.

edit: more coherent answer below.

Ok, so I mentioned a handheld platform, the PSP, doing well at $250, and you were explaining why 2004 was a different time, and things were different for PSP, so the $250 price point was less of a hindrance?  I agree with underlined, and I agree that the 3DS is a stronger competitor. I still don't agree with ninpie, I don't think it needs a price cut for reasons you've already read. But to answer your question, I don't know... It doesn't? I don't know why I went down that rabbit hole.

It's quite a sad precedent Nintendo seem to have set for future systems by slashing the price of the 3DS so early.  Now anything that doesn't take off within the first 6+ months needs a price cut and nothing else.  Not games, not bundles, not features, just a price cut, because that's what the 3DS did.  Ugh.

Not really Kresnic. The only reason why Nintendo did that is because the PSP was looming. Nintendo didn't need to accelerate the sales of the 3DS necessarily, especially not if doing so would drastically reduce profit and lead to hefty losses.

Something else is amiss, and I've explained it here -> http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=4715803

No offence, but I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here.  You're trying to say that Nintendo's price cut hasn't set a precedent for other consoles?  Because we're already seeing the effects of it now: people like Pie and others on this site, various bloggers, analysts etc ALL saying it needs a price cut.  Now, I'm not saying that it doesn't need a price cut, but what I'm trying to suggest is it doesn't have to be - and shouldn't be - the first thing Sony try to boost sales.

In your post you talk about Nintendo wanting to continue being the #1 handheld maker so they can fend off the competition from mobiles.  That's fair enough, but I don't know who at Nintendo would see Vita as a threat of stealing their handheld crown.  They've won every generation of the handheld market they've been in.  PSP managed 50% of the sales of the DS.  And the DS brand has a lot more recognition going for it at the minute.  I'm sure the price cut helped them achieve their goal of staying number one, but knocking $80 dollars of when they were already 99% certain to beat the Vita is way, way too much.
