Yes you're right..never heard of him, had to look him but he's definately directed some high profile stuff...and should be well known but isn't.

Are we talking "underrated" or "not commercially successful" here? A lot of highly regarded directors arent really that commercially successful.

How about David Yates he directed the last four Harry Potter movies and before that he pretty much only did TV work so going from TV to taking over one of the most successful movie franchises is a pretty big deal and most people still probably don't know who he is.

Also Michael Bay is not underrated. He is just simply horrible. I wish i was the authority but this is just an opinion.

Well I guess he was still learning on the job. Very few directors do a great job on their first big budget job.
