Spike Lee. I'm serious, the guy's a great director that's more well known for being at Knicks games than anything else. I also could name several that aren't underrated but old like Fellini, Kurosawa, and Bergman. I was glad to see Sam Peckinpah mentioned. He is one of my all time favorites. Without him, there would be no Tarantino or Rodriguez.

Darabont, Carpenter, R. Scott (Perhaps not so underrated, most film fans will have heard of him.), Blomkamp, Emmerich.

Alfonso Cuaron and Fernando Mereilles. Those guys don't get nearly enough love.

City of God, Blindness, Children of Men.

Hayao Miyazaki is nearly unknown outside of Japan or even Studio Ghibli in general.

The current hate for Carpenter is justified. This is coming from someone who has The Thing and Halloween in their top twenty, if not top ten list of horror films. It's like saying George Lucas is underrated because of Star Wars Episode V and American Graffiti.

Also what are the prerequisites for a Director to qualify as underrated?

yeah that's true. most will know some of their movies at least by name but many won't have a clue if they would ask them what studio ghibli is.

At least George Lucas recieved huge praise for those movies and massive box office success.

John Carpenter pretty much got booted out of hollywood after the financial failure of the Thing and Big Trouble Little China which are two of his three best movies IMO. And despite that he made Prince of Darkness, They Live and In to the Mouth of Madness afterwards, on limited budgets, all of which were very good as well.

Park Chan-wook
David Cronenberg
Olivier Marchal
Micheal Mann
Giuseppe Tornatore
Terry Gilliam

Terry Gilliam. It is a shame how unlucky he is. He has great artistic vision.
