How can the mod team be divided? I thought there was only, like, 4 mods? O.o

I voted in favour of the like button. Perhaps a system to promote to the front page the most upvoted posts would be nice as well. But like buttons do encourage conversation, and it encourages people who put work into something, or trying something new. No dislike button, though. That's a good plan.

Any group of people can be divided, no matter how small.

There are seven mods.

Very true. But, like you, I see no real cons, so long as it doesn't turn into a like-fest.

And 7 mods? I only see you, Montanahatchet, Barozi and Torillian active. And Machina left, so he doesn't do it anymore.

Really can't think of the other three. Is that bad? Don't think so...

Twesterm, sega4life, and (the boss) axumblade.

How could I forget axumblade? *facepalm*

But Twesterm isn't that active anymore, and I can't remember sega4life. The current mod team is pretty good, though, so you must be doing something right!

I have it in mind to add some new moderators. We'll see what happens.

Wouldn't want a like button without a dislike to counter it. If 2000 people read a comment and 5 agree with it and 'like' it with no way for the rest who disagree to counter it (other than a comment of course) it can give a pretty skewed perception. The only problem with a dislike button is when it gives you a negative rating which trolls love. A dislike button that takes you back to a neutral rating is fine (and necessary imo).

I didn't know that! I guess I'll have to keep an eye out! :)

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

A like button is positive reinforcement; a dislike button is an attack and is only ever going to be used when you disagree with somebody, really.

If ten people enjoyed your post, then you should get ten likes. If five more people didn't, they shouldn't be downvoting anyway. That's not what the button is supposed to be for.

I agree with you on that, I've "always" been a bit baffled that the news/sales articles had a "downvote" button. (No matter how idiotic some comments may get).

There's an awful lot of stuff on gaming forums that doesn't deserve positive reinforcement which is why you need to have some balance.

No.

You only need to see the amount of sympathy that can often appear on a banned troublemakers wall to understand why a like button would be a bad idea, given that the sympathetic users would probably like said troublemakers posts, and that sends mixed messages.

I don't know, why do you ask me?

Because you yourself said that a like button would encourage trolling. I don't see how that is possible.

So I'm asking you...how do you troll with a like button?

You do realized I dropped it after Kantor clarified, right? (you even quoted my post) and then I said my opinion stands by my first reason. Ill bold and underline. So, what are you going on about? Trolling with a "like" button?

Well we'll have to chalk this whole thing up to a misunderstanding. When you said that you stood by your first reason, I thought you meant the "it will only encourage attention whoring, and trolling" part as your first reason. And I thought to myself, how can one troll with a like button.

But since you only meant the attention whoring this whole debate is invalid.

Sure, agreed. Though there was a comma there, and I didn't give any other reason for there to be a 2nd beyond that.

I'll apologize though, it seemed like you were holding me against something.

Yeah I was under the impression that your second point was the part in parentheses. But no I wasn't holding anything against you...I can sometimes come accross harsher than I mean to so for that I do apologize.

At first I was pro-like but now I'm not so sure. It's a double edged sword really.
Like buttons could encourage posters to continue making good posts but it could also encourage trolls.
I guess registering the "likers" would keep people from likeing every troll post on the forum but I'm still not sure about it.
