Forums - Gaming - Dead Space needs “around five million” fans to survive

This just wont work. Core fans are turned off by the new setting and concept, which has already been done before. It just wont sell.

If Dead Space 2 didn't expand the franchise, with is stunning set piece events and more action gameplay, nothing will.

However EA does have an oppertinuty to expand on DS2's shortcomings, such as lack of Boss rights and hardly any new enemies.

I will buy DS3, but this is further proof of how EA just isn't in synch with its fans and general business. If Alan Wake can survive with barely 1.5 million sold, so should Dead Space.

The state of the Game Industry makes me very sad. Where a series can sell 3 million and not be profitable. Look at Kingdom of Alamur.

Back in the PS1/N64 days selling a million was a tremendous accomplishment. The way we are going we are really going to see 1-2 big franchises that have an annual from each publisher:
1) SE: Final Fantasy
2) Capcom: RE
3) THQ: Saint's Row
4) EA: Sports, Battlefield
5) Activision: COD

That sounds like a 'great' annual schedule to me! *sarcasm*

Don't get the hate, I thought Dead Space 3 have a single player campaign like the first one and 2 and will have a co op campaign with different gameplay...What happened?

If they explicitly say that they want to make Dead Space for a broader audience that usually means changes to the single player campaign as well, not just innocent additions of co-op and multiplayer.

And from the E3 demo we could see how actiony it has become. The most bothering thing for me was that ammo conservation was gone.

Dead Space 1 was praised for being more Resident Evil than RE itself (compared to RE5) and Dead Space got insane amounts of respect from gamers and now it seems it's not survival horror anymore. Dead Space 1 was a crazy good survival horror game.

But that is exactly the same complaint about Dead Space 2 when it was announced it will have an mulititplayer..
'Why does all great single player games have a multiplayer I bet Dead space 2 will be so short and suck because they spent all their time for the multiplayer'..

And now people are defending that game?

Well, I own a copy but haven't played Dead Space 2 yet. *crosses fingers for claustrophobia and ammo conservation*

But either way the inclusion of multiplayer was a sign of (bad) things to come.

Well I enjoyed Dead space 2 very much.  And the horror goes more in the direction of fucking up your mind and I love when a game does that...

Ohh please what kind of bullshit is this? Why do people think Multiplayer is something horrific?

In most cases it is just an add on to the. Many great games got MP and what changed? Nothing.

With Dead Space 2 I just meant that it was the first sign of their plan to market the game for a broader audience, not that the Singleplayer necessarily suffered (as I said, I do not know yet because I haven't yet played it).

But Multiplayer can be a significant threat to Singleplayer. Resources are sometimes taken away from the SP campaign.

For all the examples I have, I was always happy about the MP addition. Bioshock 2 didn´t suffer any damage after the MP was added it was just unnecessary, Uncharted 2 is one of my favourite games and it is 10 times better then the first one, and the MP just gave a chance to enjoy this great game with friends and girlfriends . Same thing was with Mass Effect 3 it suffered because of the shitty ending not the MP the MP was awesome. We´ll have to wait and see how God of War MP turns out. But so far the addtition of MP did not harm to great games, but some franchises died because of MP lack. The example is Vanquish, if this game had MP it would still be alive.

Five million?!?

What the hell is EA doing wrong?

That seems excessive.

I don't think you should inform a studio that their project will be shutdown if it doesn't reach a specific sales target beyond it's predecessors. (But by the way here's a load of money to get it done!) It's just not conducive to maintaining a creative direction for the series.
