Forums - Gaming - Dead Space needs “around five million” fans to survive

Bullshit Dead has not even 2 million fans and its doing just fine. But it is sad to see how the Horror genre is dying a slow death. I say Dead Space 3 will sell worse then its predecessors

The horror genre died with the end of the last generation of home systems. The only examples of horror or anything resembling it in the last 5 years was Condemned and Amnesia. As for those two, Condemned already jumped the shark with a terrible follow up entry, and Amnesia is on the PC so most will never even bother with it.

Aside from a creepy setting and a macabre story, horror usually needs to make the player feel isolated and helpless, and that is just something Dead Space has not done in either game. Isaac always has his power ranger suit on along with a arsenal of deadly weapons and gadgets that make him a killing machine. He is probably the scariest thing walking around in his respective games considering that he is armed to the teeth, wears a robot suit that depersonalizes him, and hears voices in his head. Isaac is also constantly in touch with fellow team members and other people which kind of takes away from any sense of isolation.

Now it will be even worse with the aid of a side kick that has his back at all times ... action yes, but this is certaintly not horror. I do agree that Dead Space 3 will probably sell worse than the other two. There were brief moments of tension in Dead Space 1 and 2, but I suspect those will dissapear now that I can call for back up when the going gets tough. Dead Space will, however, not have undergone much of a transition like the one we saw with Resident Evil as the first two Dead Space games were basically 70-80% action with maybe 20-30% horror.

The DayZ mod is one of the best horror games I've ever played, Limbo is really creepy, though I guess it's not what you're describing it still makes me jump. They still exist, they're found in different places.

EA are going to kill this franchise.

Making the entire sci-fi horror genre nothing but... dead space...

This is what I hate with big publishers. They think big with everything. If it's not big they won't bother. They refuse to scale down the costs and adjust to the natural popularity of a game.

Yeah, Dead Space is pretty much a dead franchise for me now. The E3 demo looked atrocoius. I wonder what the developers think when the publisher forces them to make their love child accessible and mainstream.

Look at Activision who is almost only investing in Call of Duty and Blizzard games and refuse to invest in medium sized games (except for Prototype, but that will most likely soon be dropped).

Market Capitalisation

Microsoft  - $252.19 billion

And you wonder why everyone is focusing on copying Activision which survives on 4 IP's?

Interesting chart. It sure tells me that I shouldn't tell those guys how to run a business lol.

But I still don't understand this "big only" strategy. If it's profitable it's profitable and you should keep it. In the record industry it is the same. Fairly big artists can be dropped from the big labels if their popularity goes down below a certain level, even if their albums are still selling Gold in the USA. Then a smaller label picks them up, scales costs down and makes good profit.

Btw, a bit surprising that Ubisoft's market cap is so low. I thought Ubisoft was a really slick and well-run company nowaydays.

Well was hoping for 3 to sort of end the Isaac story anyway.

Hope it's the end of a trilogy. I have the first two on PS3. I only played a few minutes of both of them before moving on to something else. Even then, I could immediately tell that they were well made titles. I'll buy part 3 and go on a big orgy of Dead Space, some day. Hopefully the saga can continue but even if it doesn't, we got three great games from a brand new franchise. Nothing to be sad about, there.

I really like 1 and 2. Great games. I hope the third isn't changing as much as you guys think. If so its probably a dead franchise for me too.

EA is full of sh17.

Dead Space 3 is the 4rth game in the series, where obvioulsly they are using the same Engine and art assets.

It sounds like EA is trying to recoup losses for other projects.......Much the same way where EA charged $50 for NBA JAM when they decided to cancel NBA LIVE/ELITE when it wasn't up to snuff.  Needless to say NBA JAM tanked, when really, it should have just been a $20 downloadable game.....$30 if you want to try and push it.

There's no way that it should cost over $120million to make DEAD SPACE 3.

Like I said,

EA is full of Sh17 here.

I think I will Start Dead Space on my PC after I finish Dragon Age
