Forums - Nintendo - Why Wii U will be brilliant - and ultimately fail

"Wii went supernova because it instantly struck a chord with people. You see the remote, and you’re curious. You see Wii Sports Tennis – or if you’re a female aged 20-40, Wii Fit, and instantly see the appeal. You pick up, play, and enjoy. It’s so simple.
Not so for Wii U. "

Alright, I'm with you so far, lay it on me...

"The console comes as standard with the big lug of a tablet controller as well as a Wii Remote and nunchuk."

Huh, didn't know the Wiimote would be included with each system. Interesting. But great if true! So, er, why's it going to fail?

"Then, there’s the Pro controller you can buy (effectively a PS3/Xbox controller clone), the balance board, the zapper, the Mario Kart wheel, Motion Plus (if your controller is from pre-2010), all confirmed to work with Wii U. It’s a veritable sea of white plastic, and granny will drown, fast."

...thazzit? It's destined to fail because "waah plastic"? And because the author's grandma is both stupid and prone to panic over minute dilemmas? While it's nice that the author is willing to publicly slam his own grandmother, I don't see how we get from Point A to Point B...

sales will be fine its nintendo, they have legions of fanboys that will buy an NES if it was rebranded as next gen.
also, tbh some of the games look alright. and with a cheap price wii-u might be good a few years after it comes out.

Actually I'm more concerned about its long term capabilities vs the rest of next Gen. I want to own one console, not two.

Well because your posting here, you more then likely have a comp.  Why not get use your comp to game and the Wii U for that intuitive experience we all crave.

It won't be brilliant nor will it fail.

But it would be better if it did one or the either. Nintendo needs to prove itself dramatically and give everyone a big middle finger or they need a complete meltdown which forces them to rethink and retool everything; can't keep skating through the middle on outdated tech and another reskin of Mario.

Are FIFA and Call Of Duty confirmed this holiday for WiiU? I was under the strong impression they weren't coming out this holiday.

The author does make a good point though, there are quite a lot of control methods for sure, I think having support for regular wiimotes is especially foolish, they should've used the launch of WiiU to make Wiimote+ mandatory.

Just came in here to say one thing: While I love the inclusion of multiple controller types that are better suited for different games, I feel like Nintendo is making it too confusing for most consumers and also confusing for publishers (which controller method do they primarily develop for?). It's a segmentation of user base, in a way.

And it's only going to confuse the more mainstream population.

i 100% agree and see this a possibly a big problem for the wii U.  i really want to know exactly what comes in the box with the wii U.

being BC with the wii is a good start but if the wii U doesn't have at least 1 wii mote can devs make a game assuming everyone will have one?

if not, how hard will it be for devs to support the various optional configurations?

if not supporting all possible configuration, how much confusion will it 'cause customers to explain what extra are required to play?

...i've seen moms at the store unable to figure out why mario isn't on playstation or why gran turismo isn't on xbox ect.  if they can't even keep that straight how hard will it be to keep all the various controller options straight? how made will they be to come home with a game they can't play?

The answer is genetics. If the grandmother is stupid, it's very likely that the grandson is stupid as well.

I'm deeply ashamed I didn't come up with this on my own.

I see next gen looking like a combination of this gen and last gen. We will see hardcore gamers stick to either Xbox or Playstation or both. And instead of the huge start and then fast fall of the Wii I think the WiiU will be more like Gamecube and keep a steady but slow pace . MS and Sony will fight over 1st place and Nintendo will follow with a respectable third.

It's pretty sad to see time after time that every single person apart from casuals (this includes Nintendo) keeps assuming that the casual buyers are stupid.

No, a wider range of controller options will not stop people from buying the console. If anything, it will make them happy that they may not have to buy lots of controllers for multiplayer.
