Forums - Gaming - The Greatest Console Rivalry of All Time

The greatest console rivalry was:

Nes vs. Master System 14 2.66%

Intellivision vs. Atari 2600 2 0.38%

PSP vs DS 8 1.52%

Super Nes vs. Sega Genesis 271 51.52%

Playstation vs. N64 29 5.51%

Xbox 360 vs. Playstation 3 145 27.57%

Nintendo 64 vs. Playstation 1 13 2.47%

Other (please specify) 4 0.76%

Gameboy vs. The World 16 3.04%

I don't know my video ga... 24 4.56%

Total:526

You're right that I was wrong to use "it" to mean Genesis when I'd just used "it" to mean "SNES". But I think a careful reader could have guessed that by the reference to the Genesis trying to defeat the NES. But a good writer doesn't make a careful reader guess! -- accidentally, anyway.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

SEGA Megadrive did exceptionally well in Europe (and more so in the UK)

Nearly all my buddies had a SEGA Megadrive (of course a fair few of us owned both a SEGA Megadrive and a Super Nintendo Entertainment System)

The biggest factor for us though was........when it came to multiplayer, we played a lot more multiplayer games on the SEGA Megadrive than we did the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Streets of Rage sessions, Micro Machines, Eternal Champions, Sonic 2 special stage battles, Mortal Kombat "with proper fatalities, unlike the SNES version" PGA tour golf 2, Road Rash, Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition and so on)

I can completely understand why folks may prefer one over the other, botttom line is that i loved both immensely, and both will always be LEGENDS amongst me and my buddies, but the SEGA Megadrives library overall appealed more to me.

So ... World War II didn't happen because the Allies won?  I hope you understand how silly that is.

SNES ended up with a big lead but most of it was simply by outlasting the Genesis.  Although, to be fair, [edit:  the Genesis] also had a head start, so you could say the whole battle was one of the SNES trying (ultimately successfully) to defeat the Genesis, which was then in the process of defeating the NES.  But believe you me, the rivalry was there.  Did you even look at the videos lewis posted?

Bolded -- completely unrelated to what I was talking about. That wasn't a business and fandom rivalry, it was an actual war people died in. "It's not a rivalry if you lose" is something I've heard more associated with sports rivalries, and I used it for exaggeration in my post. Maybe you didn't catch the part where I actually called the SNES/Genesis rivalry legendary. In other words, SNES vs Genesis was less of a rivalry because it had a clear frontrunner and ultimate winner. PS3 vs 360 is way more interesting from a sales perspective.

And no, I didn't look at any videos. I've seen the old Nintendon't commercials. I had a Genesis. I was mocked in gradeschool for my N64 and my GameCube. I'm well aware of how ugly console wars can get. PS3 vs 360 is far more interesting than any before. PS2 vs XBox wasn't a war, it was a massacre. PS1 curbstomped the N64. SNES vs Genesis is the only one that came close, but it didn't really come close.

It has to be SNES v Sega Megadrive/Genesis.

I was at a boarding school in Lagos, Nigeria at the time. I felt the effects of this war all the way out there.
I remember having heated arguments with some Sega Megadrive fans. To me, the Megadrive games, console and controller all looked a little cheap compared to the quality of the SNES.

Hail Mario.

You missed one. 2D Sonic destroys 2D Mario

Dude, I just went on youtube and looked up Genesis commercials.  I'm so pissed right now.

You also started a new sentance, which I believe means you should have redefined the subject anyway (the name of the console instead of "it") but yeah I figured it out while I was typing a response.

Having said that though, isn't the MegaDrive having some kind of rebirth in South America now?... Hmm some quick research may point to the Master System instead, except that it uses a MegaDrive controller (the one with 6 face buttons)

^ Watched the commercials and all I see is the underdog bashing the winner. Reminds me of Phillies/Yankees. To the Phils, the Yanks are the team that swept the Whiz Kids, preventing them from winning what would have been their first ever World Series. It had been 35 years since the Phils had won the pennant, and it would be another 30 before they would win it again.

To the Yanks, the Phillies are just a team they defeated twice while accumulating their 27 championships.

Let's see some videos showing Nintendo bashing Genesis and I'll reconsider.

Nintendo vs Sega.
It went beyond the magazines, commercials and the media.

Gangs were prominent in the US then, and we acted in the same fashion.
Organized graffitis exist where taggings takes place, and you claim territory.
You have reputation to uphold, respect to gain, and vengeance to wreak. Internet did not exist then, and we dealt with the battle face to face. There's Identity, Recognition, Discliple and Loyalty.
You defend what you must, life or death, you ride together you die together.

SNES vs. Genesis was a fiercer battle, because it happened before the rise of multiconsole ownership. People got one console and therefore were stuck on this side for years. It must have been most extreme in North America because of the lack of advertising laws that forbid you to slam the competition in commercials and it being a close race for a long time.

Nowadays people not only own both a 360 and PS3, but sometimes multiple times the same console. It's first and foremost an imaginary war and it's pretty ridiculous because most of the bestselling games on both consoles are the same third party games. SNES vs. Genesis was a battle between Nintendo and Sega. 360 vs. PS3 is about exclusive DLC. It's a joke.

This is the ultimate answer.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=117259&page=1  You may have to zoom in to see the text, though.  They did a few ads like that.  They also sent out videos making fun of Sony and Sega when they released Starfox 64.  I got one in the mail back when.  It's probably on youtube.

Anyway, the Megadrive/Genesis released ahead of the Super Famicom/Super Nes and for a while, it really was a rivalry.  In the end, it was obvious that Nintendo had the more capable system though it was tough to develop for in the beginning.  Sega abandoned the Genesis early and the Snes got support even after the PS1/Saturn released.  That's why it looks like Nintendo handed Sega their asses (and why gamers didn't trust Sega after the Genesis).  At the time, it wasn't the case.  Imagine if Microsoft quit making Xbox 360's right now but the PS3 was still selling well three years later.  That's basically what happened in the 16-Bit era.

Also, I'd like to point out that it wasn't just Sega taking jabs at the competition.  EVERYBODY was talking smack at the time.  Neo Geo guys were bashing 16-Bit guys. Turbo-Grafx ads were bashing Sega CD (look up Johnny Turbo).  It was a battle royale with two guys stealing the show.
