No 2012 launch for The Last of Us, confirms Yoshida

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has killed off any chance of a 2012 launch for The Last of Us, telling VG247 it won’t launch this year.

Yoshida confirmed the news when talking about the company’s line-up for next year, confirming the near-future focus was providing growth and investing respectively in PlayStation Vita.

“We are not ready to talk about 2013. But some of the games we showed like God of War and The Last of Us are not coming out this year,” he said in an E3 interview due to go live shortly.

“We will talk more about what our line-up of games will be like in 2013. PS Vita we just launched. It’s been just four months.

“It’s its second year next year; it’s a really crucial year for us so we will continue to invest in making games from our first party studio standpoint, and at the same time, we would like to see more publishers do games like Assassin’s Creed III Liberation; that is fantastic.”

This is the first time a release date for the game has been narrowed by either Sony or Naughty Dog down since its announce at the VGAs last December. An early 2012 or early 2013 release had been previously on the cards for the new IP from the Uncharted developer.

So that makes the PS3 lineup for this holiday season very weak.

  • LBP Karting
  • PSBAR
  • Sly

2 Nintendo copies and Sly. PS3 received a pricecut 9 months ago, so a new pricecut does not seem likely to me.
Is this enough to go against the Wii U launch or the Xox 360 lineup with Halo 4, Forza Horizon, Dance Central 3 and Fable Journey?

What do you think?

YAY!!! Awesome news.

4 ≈ One

Sony better bundle big time this holiday season gift cards with purchase games bundles otherwise they will get destroyed this holiday season. Wii U and Halo coming out mean tough competition. They better promote Vita and bundle memory cards in order to try and compete plus actually market the vita's games. They must really be counting on COD to move units with that weak PS3 exclusive line up.

Sony better create a massive advertising campaign for All-Stars if they want the franchise to be a killer app. They should bundle LBPK during the holidays.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I thought it would be September but next year is fine too.

Meh, Sony never learn.

It will struggle in Japan against WiiU, but I feel it should be okay against the Burnout/NFS copy, Just Dance copy, poor Kinect spinoffs and Halo. Unless MS cut the price.

Should just do what MS have done for the last few Years. Release great value bundles. A cheap looking PS3 with a couple of big name games (GT5/ Uncharted Twinpack) will look real nice next to WiiU, at least.

Ohh wow... so both TLOU and GOW3 are not to be released this year? MS is gonna own real bad. Gap will increase.

That confirms a 2014 next-gen launch. Told you all.

Damn, that is bad. Hmm I think most of my money will be going to Nintendo this year. Given if Lego City Undercover is delayed to 2013 I am going to be really sad.

and still a more diverse line up than the current gen competition..impressive

Honestly as sucky as it is, I'm glad they are not rushing this out..UC3 could have used at least one more month to polish things out a bit. ND said they are never going to do that again and it seems they are keeping their word. Take your time ND, take your time
