What's new from the DS version? I see you can swim now, what else?

You have legs! Seriously, you can equip leg-wear now.

But the main difference is that now you are the mayor of the town, so I expect some very cool decisions for you to make. And the online in this version is probably miles ahead than any other.

Hm ok, I'll wait and see

I remember my stepson buying Animal Crossing for his GC. Since you could have 4 players, he convince myself and his mom to play with him. Within a few weeks he was bored of it and never played again (he was 12 and did not like reading), but the wife and I were hooked on trying to collect all the stuff, meet all the visitors, experience all the events, etc. We continued to play for a just over a year. When the DS version came out, we both played it for about 4 months, at which point I stopped, but my wife kept on playing with friends online which really maintained her interest.
IF the 3DS version has expanded the game play and the experience, I would be very tempted to pick it up on day one. IF it is the same basic game with 3D effects, I will probably pass.

One bad ass thing about the GC version was the NES games that you could collect and play.  They took the NES games out for all the other versions due to Nintendo wanting to sell the old school games (first through GBA then Virtual Console).  I rebought the GC version a year or two ago after I realized that I got rid of it a long time ago (just for the NES games).

You are so right. I remember collecting and playing them myself, although until you wrote about it here, I had forgotten. I will have to see if I still have a copy of the GC version, or if my stepson has it.

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, always assume you have the upper hand.

I am really hyped for Animal Crossing! Let's Go to the City was a huge disappointment in how little it changed anything in what was basically a N64 game still. However, Animal Crossing 3DS is looking fantastic :D As long as they add some interesting new features (Although a few secret NES games would be EPIC), I will probably buy it day one.

I think it's mainly the online that's going to secure my purchase

It should.  I believe I played the DS version online far more than the Wii version (even though I did play online a decent amount on AC: City Folk).  It seems a portable AC is more suited for online play (although I am sure a Wii U version will be pretty good for online).  One problem with AC: City Folk was that you had to drop another 15-20 for Wii Speak or buy the bundle package (thankfully I put it to even more use with MH3 before support for the Wii Speak mic was pretty much dropped).  The DS and 3DS have built in mics but the Wii didn't.  The Wii U will have a built in mic which will make it easier for everyone to communicate online (could be a good thing like in games like AC, MH, etc or a bad thing like hearing kids whine on CoD).

I enjpyed the GCN version but I hated how circular the world was in the ds version. Absolutely unbearable.

I loved the DS version, I played it every day for about six months, and played it at least once a week for another 8 months or so. I'm really interested in how the 3DS version turns out, and I hope it is a real step forward for the series. I didn't bother with the Wii version because they didn't seem to have done enough to it to make it a genuinely interesting experience in the way the DS version was. I'll be keeping a close eye for any Animal Crossing news at E3, that's for sure.

I'm excited about the new AC for sure. I am, however, cautiously excited. I was in love with the GC AC, really enjoyed the DS AC since it was AC on the go, and had some fun with the Wii AC. It just felt like the games never really advanced beyond the "original" on the GC. I'm going to be really let down if the 3DS version is more of the same with some mayor duties/rights thrown in.

I was hoping the DS version would incorporate some multi-player games or activities. AC seems like such a social game, but actually playing it feels like such a solo experience. I hope the 3DS AC will have some sort of games we can play with other people, even if it's something simple like hide and seek or tag.

I also think it would be great to be able to play your 3DS Virtual Console games in the new AC, which would be a nice homage to the GC AC and how you could play NES games.

I remember how excited I was for AC on GC. I went nuts when I read that certain Blockbuster stores had copies of AC 1 week before the game was released. I called around town and found a store that had a copy and immediately raced over there to rent it...the last time I ever rented a game I believe. What fun :P

"I feel like I could take on the whole Empire myself."

You guys should skip some games sometimes.

I absolutely love Animal Crossing, but skipping the Wii game will make this one seem more fresh. I believe it's one in a generation game. Choose your medicine (Wii U or 3DS now) and go with it. I chose 3DS because it's so much easier to play for 5-10 minutes everyday (every single day! I remember I couldn't leave home before playing at least some minutes - and I did that for almost a year). I remember to even having to sneak my DS sometimes to bars to catch K.K.'s concert on saturday's nights, lol! Can't do that with Wii U.
