Forums - Nintendo - "The casuals have moved on from the Wii" - Not true at all

Most casual gamers I know use smartphones or tablets, in fact I don't know anyone who still uses their Wii regularly.

1st, Wii U announcement didnt kill anything, COD games on WIi have been selling like crap for years, multiplat core Wii games have been selling worst than the HD counterparts forever.  and Zelda is a Ninty game a popular one at that. So lets not make excuses

As for COD if it is indeed about playstyle, then that is a core game. People play that game for HOURS on end, hours, in fact thats probably the only game they are playing. So by your logic COD is indeed a core game. WiiFIt?? I seriously doubt people are playing that everyday for hours on end.

The Wii COD games before MW3 all cleared a million and were selling much better at this point in their lifespans compared to MW3. This steep decline in 2011 was due to both the Wii U announcement and a lack of Wii games for the year putting gamers off the console.

And COD is very casual; its very accessible, simple, and noob friendly. Almost anyone can pick up and play it in groups of friends, just like Mario Kart or Wii Sports.

the COD games on WIi have been declining since 3, every single one has sold worst than the last. While all the other console (not sure about PC) has actually risen, saying its declining because of Wii U makes no sense, what you think the small amount of COD players on Wii are holding out for a Wii U version?? Knowing that it is an annual franchise and their will be no Wii U version of CODMW3?? Even if they were interested in getting WIi U why would it stop them form buying the Wii version now?  I will agree that gamers have been put off by the console, but i doubt it has to do with WiiU, most likely they just bought another console or PC and play the game on that. and judging by how well MW3 is doing compared to BLOPS that seems likely.

As for second point, you put it that way and your right.

Core audiences though are indeed gone. Anyone see CoD: MW3 sales on Wii? Yeesh!

The announcement of the Wii U kinda killed it. And COD is a casual game.

Zelda's more core than COD, and it's racked up a respectable 3+ million so far. Xenoblade is also doing alright for itself in the US, for a JRPG and a new IP. The core isn't entirely gone, it's just reduced.

The industry does not consider CoD a casual game. But call it what you want.

The industry still holds the childish view that hardcore means M-rated. Hardcore is a playstyle, and most COD players are about as hardcore as Wii Fit users.

Well there aren't many fitness, party, or dance games that get an M rating. But once they start adding curse words, gore, and titties... maybe those genres will be core. Atleast with your logic.

Anyhow, you're arguing with what the industry considers core and casual. The fact is "core" games always had modest performence on Wii (excluding a few 1st party exclusives) and  it got worse over time.

God, I freaking hate gaming on tablets and smartphones. I think it's likely that Wii owners have moved onto smartphones and tablets. Let's face it, the reason the Wii sold so well (imo) was because it was a trend. All those "casual gamers" that bought the Wii because it was the cool thing to get have now moved onto the next cool thing to get, which in this case are smartphones and tablets. Anyways, that's my shitty analysis. Please excuse any spelling or grammatical errors I may have made.

Those numbers are of the the faithful old owners of Wii, who keep buying new titles to keep the satisfaction level up.

Second that, Wii U announcment to be blamed.

The rate of decline was dropping though; W@W fell 400k from COD3 and MWR another 400k from that; Black Ops fell only 200k less than MWR. MW3 will probably make it to 600k or so; a 600k frop from BO. The movement away from the Wii in 2011 was because of the Wii U not just because the next console was on the way, but because development had shifted from the Wii to the Wii U meaning less games.

COD3 sold more than the PS3 version, then COD4 wasn't released simultaneously with the HD versions, so the audience moved. It wasn't until years later that they started making ports, and we all know what happens to late releases. The things the Wii audience has had to put up, not even knowing if the next version was going to be released, etc. No wonder they jumped ship.

It depends on what you mean by casual gamers, but overall, I pretty much agree with the OP. I'd say that Wii owners are buying more "casual" titles than they did before. Look at the Wii's top sellers this year.

1. Just Dance 3 (1713k)
2. Zumba Fitness (1159k)
3. Mario Party 9 (1091k)
4. Zumba Fitness 2 (940k)
5. Mario Kart Wii (798k)
6. NSMB Wii (783k)

And the list is games like those down to Skyward Sword at 10th. In other words, there's absolutely nothing to suggest that the Wii owners now buy more "hardcore" titles than they did before.

Similarly, there's nothing to suggest that Wii owners are buying noticeably fewer games than they did before. There are fewer games bought due to fewer consoles bought, but I'm personally surprised at how well the Wii's software sales are holding up.

it should not have been declining at all, thats my point, not when its the market leader and all other versions were actually increasing(sans DS). How is it the market leader and its version only accounts for what 1-2% of overall sales for any given COD game?? Never in console history has that happened.

As for Wii U, we are just gonna have to agree to disagree, Wii U might have played a small part of it, but lets be real the Wii was declining a bit with games and sales prior to the announcement.
