And hopefully, the sea of casual crap will go with them. But, of course, it won't, because:

a) There are many kinds of casual gamer, and some would choose Call of Duty over Farmville any day
b) People will always make casual crap.

Of course, there are good casual games too, but they're probably better suited to other devices anyway.

people will be quick to bash pachter (you guys always do) but when next gen releases and everyone does terrible please remember your statements.

Are people seriously still listening to this fool...? Its obvious that he knows nothing about the gaming industry yet some idiot keeps paying him and allowing him to act like he has 'inside knowledge' it is so bad its almost laughable

There are atleast 50 million hardcore gamers worldwide, big enough of a population to sustain hardcore gaming for generations.

I agree with Patcher.

Casuals don't see the need to buy a new console every 6 years.
We must think about the Wii, that I think it's a clear example of the casual-wave. The Wii got an amazing start, thanks to it's incredible, and totally new, motion control capabilities, but after a few years, nobody was so interested in it, and there was a big decline in sales.

Talking about Kinect I think it is a success, and a big one, as I already said in another thread, but it's going to be temporary. Casuals won't buy the next xbox just for improved Kinect features, they will need something more.

So, "normal people" are not so used and "prepared" to jump to a new generation, and to this we have to add all the new smartphones and tablets. You could think that they aren't influencing the videogame market, but it's not. Right now parents buy to their sons Ipods, etc, that are becoming new mp3 players/handled consoles.

Edit: 100th post! :)

agreed.

lots of casual gamers wont need to go anywhere near a console again... particularly handhelds.

cue head in sand reactions and the usual which would be ok if pacheter had just murdered their mothers.

Why the hell cant people see that this is patently obvious?

Deep down they know the truth, but they are in denile.

When apple release the iTV and you can plug iPads, iPhones etc. into them and they release a xbox 360/ ps3 style controller, then the home console market will fall to pieces..

I'll just say I will be very surprised if the 8th gen of consoles sells more units than the 7th for precisely this reason.

Barring any future Wii Fit type or Wii Sports one off titles that literally sell millions of hardware units to consumers who have little to no interest in playing any other video games, there's just not going to be a repeat of the Wii generation which everyone should acknowledge by now was carried by the casual consumer.

The big unknown factor for the 8th gen will most likely be Kinect 2.0 in terms of picking up significant numbers from the casual demographic, but it will take more than Dance Central 3 and Kinect Sports 2 to make it happen.

But to say there will be no casual market for the 8th gen is saying gaming for all but the dedicated gaming audience is effectively moving out of the living room completely, which is of course ridiculous.

And naturally "drastically reduced support from the casual audience for the next consol generation" simply doesn't sound as quote-worthy as "casual gamers will never buy another console ever again."

Rol predicted this way before you did Patcher!
