The 3D is a central piece of the 3DS appeal.
Some games have incredible 3D. I played Sonic generations with 3D all the time, but due to battery life and rest to the eyes i tend to turn in off most of the time. Its always there when i want to enhance the experience though, and no other portable system offers me that.
The question though is limited...was the 3D a good move? Yes it was cause it gave uniqueness to the system when compared to the DS. Something the Vita failed to do with the PSP.
I don't think it will make any difference at all in the long run, so it was a pretty neutral move. Some people may be put off by the 3D focus others might buy for the 3D.

From a gamers point of view every option is a good one, I agree. But 3D limits the 3DS in other areas (battery life and price), so offers it enough to make up for it?
Here's the deal. The stereoscopic 3D is a nice little extra on the 3DS. Nintendo's big mistake was naming it the 3DS since it kind of paints them into a corner because the name 3DS suggests that every game coming out for it will have the 3D and that the 3D is the only thing the distinguishes the 3DS from a normal DS. Naming the handheld after a feature was not a good idea. The Wii isn't called the Motion Controlled Fun Machine since that would limit it's options.

I think 3D is a potential game changer. In my opinion it adds a lot to the immersion and visual impression.
BUT in its current form it feels a bit like a beta version. They need to find a solution for the narrow viewing angle. After playing for a while I find it increasingly hard to keep the 3D focus intact, it's not a relaxed way of playing.
So basically, I love it, but its practicability needs to improve.
I don't like it at all. It doesn't look good at all to me but luckily there is an option to turn it off :D
I honestly don't think I would have bought one if 3D hadn't been one of the features. That probably puts me in the minority.
Without it, it's a little too similar to the DSi, improved specs aside. "It has an analog slider disc" isn't much of a marketing bullet point.
However, Nintendo has been good about adding new features and services that maybe should have been available at or closer to launch to distinguish it as a more connected device relative to the DSi.
From a cost perspective, having the 3D display added little to the overall cost of production; no penalty there.
From a performance perspective, shutting the slider off can be coded to enable faster frame rates should the individual developer wish to do so; again no real penalty.
3D is the future wether u like it or not, so its not a bad move, its actually ahead of its time
