Further cementing my estimations. I'll update my vs thread with the 1GB ram and 2.9GHz speed.

Its 1GB of VRAM on the GPU. They didn't say anything about system RAM.

When did I say otherwise?

People need to venture into my comparison thread more often.

I doubt it's only clocked at 2.9 GHz. Even the Cell processor is clocked at 3.2GHz and from my understanding the 3850 APU is relatively easy to overclock. I reckon a 3.2GHz APU minimum with Sony's own custom cooling solution.

I also doubt they're using a 3850 based chip. The CPU architecture in that chip is anchient. If they go the APU route they'll probably be looking at Trinity based APUs which are based on Piledriver (2nd gen Bulldozer/FX chips with a 7 series GPU). Would make more sense having two 7 series GPUs in the same console in crossfire too.

I suspect we'll see 1-2 Gb of total RAM. 2Gb should really be the minimum imo.

Heat.

AMD CPUs run hot and downlocking it to a level that is still good enough while greatly improving the heat generation is solid gain.

That's an advantage the others have when going with IBM Power 7's.

"but so far it has been on par with the current generation.'"

LOL! Fake.

Graphic wise we don't need to go so much futher next generation
what we do need is everyting else like less laggy games and better AI etc etc

Lag can't really be helped. Latency is a problem with the internet structure as  a whole.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

For some reason I highly doubt the systems will come with only 1GB of Ram. I would say 2GB will be the magic number.

To sum it up, PC rules every time.

If you're just looking for raw speed, of course. Consoles provide a better experience without setup and choosing parts and driver issues et cetera. Also provides some unique games that rely on the controller.

(or did - I miss those days where you put a disc in and the game just starts, now it's this Wii Menu and Xbox Live BS)

*reminisces*

I don't mind there being a main menu as such though, as long as it is easy to get through (Wii menu being two button presses to get to my game) but if I do buy the Wii U or whichever next-gen console... I suspect I am going to miss being able to buy my game complete and bug free from the store, instead of waiting a week till they patch the crap out of it and charge us extra to see the ending.

Oh this is hysterical, the rumor mill is going crazy now. Lets just all calm down and wait until E3, I sense a lot will be revealed there.

Or we can all speculate until we are blue in the face, here is my speculation. The PS4 will use 15 Atari Jaguar Processors, in series, not parallel to power it. How does that work you ask? It works pretty god damned well thank you very much.

I get the feeling Sony would be far better at comming up with a cooling solution than AMDs stock coolers (the original PS3 had a liquid cooling solution). Even with off the shelf cooling the 3850 can overclock to 3.2 GHz. With Sony and AMD engineers working on a specific solution for both cooling and gaining higher frequency, I doubt they'd restrict themselves to only 2.9GHz.

I still doubt they'd use a 3850. If they use an APU it'll most likely be trinity based.

Alternatively (and more likely imo), they'll go with a Piledriver CPU, 77xx based GPU, with shared RAM and look at integrating them into an APU within 1-2 years.

The ps4 will be leaps and bounds ahead of this generation, sony doesn't do that, VITA is an example of that, everyone expected vita to be barely more powerful than psp, and more gimmicky than any other device they've released to compete with 3DS, well guess what, it's almost as powerful as the PS3...... and it's being sold for a profit

hmm, the vita isn't anywhere near the ps3, and is made of off the shelf parts, it is hardware wise nearly identical to the ipad 2, just doubled core counts, with nice cheap ram, only thing that is special is the screen.  Geometry wise it is somewhere  current games are between the gc and xbox,  scenes in Uncharted are "only" as complex as scenes in a game like Resident Evil 4, where as uncharted ps3 scenes where about 5 times are complex, Uncharted 2 they're in the 8 times as complex range.
The vita isn't anywhere near the twins, frankly the vita points to sony doing something really off the shelf this time

I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!

NOW A PUNISHER CAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doing assymetrical crossfire is not easy. And it has to be assymetrical with the two different GPUs. Symmetrical would bring the better GPU down to the worse one's level. Programming for this isn't terrible for a single application, but it is time consuming, and will add cost to dev's games, which, is already astronomically high. Anyone sense a pattern in this new gen? Graphics technology used to improve leaps and bounds with each gen, but these days, you need REALLY good hardware that is only economical on a PC. The best graphics on PC will be a gen ahead of next gen, but who really cares? What I want are more streamlined experiences, a better online environment, fewer loading times, and not having to hear my fan whine as it tries in futility to keep the CPU cool.

Also, none of this "no used games" bullshit. I can afford to buy all of my games new these days, but there was a time when I definitely could not. Even when I did purchase a new game I usually traded something in to offset the cost. This sucks for teenagers or people with lower incomes, definitely limits their gaming experiences. I am going to boycott any system that implements this feature for as long as I can (they are going to have to have some INSANELY good games to get me to break the picket line).
