Ah the Abyss, love that one too. The extended edition wasn't as good though, the extra stuff going around above water isn't really needed and only takes you out of the isolated underwater feeling.
What happened to the underwater / submarine genre?
I watched a different kind of underwater movie today. The little mermaid. Looks so much better on blu-ray than dvd. Some scenes were almost painful to watch on dvd color wise. The new bonus features are awesome. Footage of how Disney has been using motion capture since Snow white with tons of live action clips of different movies. Actors using simple props in front of a green or blue wall with masking tape to provide a sense of scale. Fun to see all the actors they used performing scenes side by side with the final result, mimicking camera pans by rotating the performing actors by hand on a board with wheels.

The magic behind the magic.
Also included was an original lecture by Howard Ashman, explaining the theory behind the musical structure of the movie. Very interesting.
it's one of my wife's favorite movies, for me it's a solid 8 after finally being able to see it as it was originally intented.
