Anyway things are looking very bleak to hit that 100 million barrier, if it does pass this milestone it'll barely get over. Won't beat the PSONE.

It's worth noting that some of PS1's install base came after the PS2 launched. By the time the PS2 launched in the major territories, the PS1 had sold less than 89 million units. The remainder came later.
But more than that, simple mathematics does suggest that the Wii has a chance to not just break the 100 million barrier, but also beat the PS1's 102.5 million.
Why? Well, let's look at DS vs 3DS for a comparison. For the week ending 10th of December, 2011, the DS managed to sell 288,000 units. If one looks at the final 3 months of 2011, the DS managed to sell nearly 2.5 million in that period, despite the 3DS being in its first big holiday season. If you look at the period beginning 11th of June, the DS sold 4.35 million units, despite directly competing with 3DS throughout that time. Note that the DS Lite price dropped to $99 at the start of June.
Keep in mind that Nintendo still has the option to do another price drop on the Wii - indeed, it is likely that they will do this in the next couple of months. Note that the PS1 was only $99 (down from a $300) at the time that the PS2 was launched, whereas the Wii is still $149.
If handled well, I could definitely see the Wii managing to sell reasonably well, reasonably breaking the 100 million mark, and possibly reaching the PS1's 102.5 million. It's not guaranteed, but it can happen. If one accounts for the likely continued presence of the Wii for, say, another year, during which it could get as much as 2 million more units sold, it has a reasonable shot at breaking both marks eventually. The final few million won't be to regular gamers, of course... but there's always a demand for older, cheaper systems.
