Forums - Sales - The Wii will not pass 100 million

alot of people think the wii is gonna still sell after the wii u is released but its not the same thing as ps2. ps2 was still selling very well before ps3 released but look at the wii. its almost dead and i think the wii u is gonna kill it off. ps2 was built with longevity in mind, the wii wasnt. whos gonna want a wii in 2013?

I wonder if he got the idea of this thread after I stole the prediction layout from his sig.

Anyway, consoles tend to keep on selling very well after their successors have released, the Wii should do particularly well, it should manage about 110 LTD at least.

What do you guys think of my predictions for the end of this year, especially for the Wii? When is the Wii U coming out?

Wii too high, the others look ok I think.

Wii is going to sell less than 7m this year, probably near 6m. Your prediction says 7.8m though

I'm expecting the Wii U to release after Black Friday, is it still reasonable? I want to know the release date.

Forget about Dragon Quest X?

No, how will that help? At most it will provide a 50k boost.

How? U better check DQ sales history. it always sold above 3m, and then u said it will provide 50k boost?

The Wii will not pass 100 million until holiday

I think the Wii will pass the 100 million mark around Black Friday or shortly after its next price cut.

Anyway things are looking very bleak to hit that 100 million barrier, if it does pass this milestone it'll barely get over. Won't beat the PSONE.

It's worth noting that some of PS1's install base came after the PS2 launched. By the time the PS2 launched in the major territories, the PS1 had sold less than 89 million units. The remainder came later.

But more than that, simple mathematics does suggest that the Wii has a chance to not just break the 100 million barrier, but also beat the PS1's 102.5 million.

Why? Well, let's look at DS vs 3DS for a comparison. For the week ending 10th of December, 2011, the DS managed to sell 288,000 units. If one looks at the final 3 months of 2011, the DS managed to sell nearly 2.5 million in that period, despite the 3DS being in its first big holiday season. If you look at the period beginning 11th of June, the DS sold 4.35 million units, despite directly competing with 3DS throughout that time. Note that the DS Lite price dropped to $99 at the start of June.

Keep in mind that Nintendo still has the option to do another price drop on the Wii - indeed, it is likely that they will do this in the next couple of months. Note that the PS1 was only $99 (down from a $300) at the time that the PS2 was launched, whereas the Wii is still $149.

If handled well, I could definitely see the Wii managing to sell reasonably well, reasonably breaking the 100 million mark, and possibly reaching the PS1's 102.5 million. It's not guaranteed, but it can happen. If one accounts for the likely continued presence of the Wii for, say, another year, during which it could get as much as 2 million more units sold, it has a reasonable shot at breaking both marks eventually. The final few million won't be to regular gamers, of course... but there's always a demand for older, cheaper systems.

You can't compare PSOne and PS2 numbers for the Wii and WiiU and you DEFINITELY can't post numbers about the DS and 3DS numbers, that makes no sense. They don't compare to the Wii at all, when the 3DS came out the DS was still selling very strong, the Wii is far from selling strong right now, as soon as Wii U get's an official release date expect Wii sales to get cut in half, and when the WiiU releases expect sales to be barely alive.

When the PS2 passed 100m it had great quality. The Wii does not. It is passed by the other consoles, and there are two major competitors. I think the Wii has lost its steam.

Wii will probably reach 100 million in late january/early february 2013
