Forums - Gaming - Fez's dev to Japanese dev At GDC: "Your games just suck"...Japanese Developer Leaves GDC

Man this is not cool of him at all. It is just western taste for games have changed this gen. I remember last gen it was all about jap PS2 games. Nintendo alone outsells a lot of western franchises combined. So creativity is there and business sense is not gone anywhere either.

"Some very popular and critically acclaimed Japanese gaming series are dying in case of sales, quality or even both"
http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=4456605

You decided that I decided to dismiss new IPs. I never talked about them explicitly as I was concentrating on franchises to make easier comparisons between this gen and last gen. Still I would say last gen also had more great new Japanese IPs than this gen. So again, missing quantity.

You want to tell me a dozen of 500k sellers are more important than those established franchises I mentioned earlier with at least 2-3 million sales ? Of course gamers get the idea that Japanese games have fallen in quality when popular franchises are taking a hit left and right in either sales, quality (reputation) or both, because it's much easier to compare.

As I pointed out your original post never mentions big games. You simply stated that it is hardly false that all japanese games suck. Whether established franchises or new IPs are more important in terms of sales is irrelevant. You were agreeing that all japanese games suck. I am pointing out that the Japanese games industry is still pumping out huge amounts of fantastic games.

If you want to cherry pick games then we can make any statement we like about industries and support it.

You agreed with the guys original point and I am challenging that. I find agreeing with a guy who says things such as ''Your [Japanese] games suck'', ''sorry japanese guy but your country's games are F***ing terrible now'' pretty offensive.

You obviously did not understand what I was saying and only saw what you liked to see.
I was agreeing with the message behind the statement, but not in the way he said it.

Some people just take everything too serious and don't think about the actual meaning.

Developer who is not able to gets his game publishes criticizes an entire segment of the videogame industry that does get their games published.

Now excuse me as I go play Minecraft in a sec here.

Europe (mostly) belongs to "the West". I can name a few more recent games: The Witcher 2, Minecraft, Deus Ex: HR, Uncharted 3, LBP2, Rayman: Origins

I know P, but even the Europe is different from America, so Phil Fish can kiss my ass, if you know what I mean. I know the guy's from Montreal, but he's not in line with Montreal thinking in any way, and is probably not from the francophone community, where we associate more to europe than America.

Having said that, European style games (excluding Britain) even are different from American-style games. That's kind of what I meant, as poorly as it was said.

Never heard of this guy, or this ''Fez'' thing, so I can't help myself but thinking:

What a great way to ridicule yourself before you've even got a reputation.

Seriously, his brain must be under developed to think he's worthy of making a statement like this.

I hope people take this into account when deciding to purchase his game. I would never give my money to someone who puts down someones work. The Japanese Dev probably put a lot of effort into it. Jerk!

But FEZ shapes to be an awesome game and because of that no one will give a shit about what happened at GDC.

Wow, what an arrogant prick.

I don't see the big problem with JPN titles though. Why is it that everyone thinks all games need to be like Western styled games? So much of this stuff is so over rated to begin with.

He didn't say they needed to be "western styled". That is exactly what we don't want. We want japanese style games that have moved on like western style games have moved on. Half the problem is that japanese style games are becoming like western games but in a really crappy way, like they're ideas are clunky and a generation behind. Not surprising, the same would be true for western developers trying japanese style ideas.

Obviously there is a slight problem since the whole concept of japanese style games is very difficult to move forward by their nature. For a good analergy JRPG vs WRPG. A JRPG wouldn't be a JRPG without it's cliche story, cliche characters and cliche battle system. A WRPG offers much more room for development and ideas within a much less rigid framework. That isn't to say it's not possible.

And there, I believe lies the critisism, they have not developed in a positive way at all.

Ninja Gaiden 3 comes out soon.

That will prove Mr Fish's point to a tee. It will be almost inevitably be a terrible game for someone looking for more of Ninja Gaiden 12 with new ideas. I mean new good ideas.

Edit - I take that back about the battle system in JRPGs, Resonance of Fate sprung to mind, now THAT was fucking brilliant no two ways about it and how it should be done.

Same here! :P

man and that to someone from japan straight in his face? they are always so respectful to you if you talk with someone from japan and this guy wasn't able to say him this a little bit more respectful? what a prick!
i believe he's a huge nerd who doesn't understand the difference between "those games suck" on the internet or straight in the face to someone in real life exactly from there living exactly from this.

i think as well that japanese games aren't as good as they were 10 years ago but i think the same about most western games nowadays compared to their predecessor. sure new technique helps to make better graphics and blabla but if it comes to simplification nowadays even in games for "core" gamers i could cry.

trolling statement ? Yes
truth ? not quite but hardly false IMO

You nailed it. It's a shame you guys (not you) can't read between the lines of what this guy is saying.

If you were the boss of some company and your employees are doing sweet FA in terms of productivity, you would tell them. Unless you want that to carry on?

Japanese people are too polite and don't like change (that's a fact), their games are the same. They stink and are getting smellier by the year. This Fish guy speaking his mind can only have a good outcome in the long term.
