Given the software Nintendo had prepared for the holiday season, they needed to cut the price and also this drastically. I am pretty sure that they gave third parties to understand that such or such amount of 3DSes will have been sold by specific dates, so Nintendo had to make sure to meet those goals in order to be able to count on good third party support. This lines up with Iwata's statements from before and after the price cut.

Of course, if Nintendo had been smart, they would have launched the 3DS at $200 with 2D Mario. And had they been smarter, they would have excluded the 3D, because it's proven to be worthless.

I don't think Sony will have been stupid enough to do the same thing as the bolded.

We know 3rd parties love Sony, especially when Microsoft aren't throwing Millions at them... So I see no reason why the Vita will be starved of good games, at least during this 1st Year. We've heard great things from developers and things look quite good right now.
____________

Another problem with the 3DS launch, was that they launched it sooner than they needed to. They wanted something to counter the losses of that Quarter/FY. They could have eaisly kept the DS on the market for a few more Months, it was selling superbly and still had a steady stream of games releasing.

I've always thought the 3DS was planned to launch WW, Holiday 2011. Nintendogs, Layton, Zelda on launch in November... Mario as the big December game with a whole bunch of 3rd party support too. Mario Kart to follow in Feb/March. That's why there were few big releases leading up to the Holidays.

Follow that strategy and the 3DS would have been cheaper to produce on launch, they could have kept the $250 launch price (now with even more profit) for a longer period of time due to great games being available and the DS would've still been bringing in huge profits up until the Holidays.

Rol, that last statement is something I could not disagree with more. I just wanted to get that out there.

What do you think the 3D has added to the 3DS?

Has it been used well as a game-changing aspect, like the DS' own touch screen?

Nintendo was based on gameplay with Wii/Ds

now, by adding 3D they focus on vision as well, and it is not worthless, it is awesome, especially in later games where it's used much better

3D makes the graphics of the 3DS seem much better, at least to my eyes

and if 3D was worthless, the industry wouldn't bother re-release so many movies all over (with success), add 3D to Ps3 and PC screens and tv's

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

The fact that you are goal-post moving before I rebuttal lets me know that there is nothing i can say that will sway you on this topic. I disagree, and that is all there is to it. I do not bite bait, that is why I post so infrequently.

I didnt move any goal posts, I just asked you 2 questions. If you cant answer them, then I guess the silence answers them for you.

I am only doing this because I believe you are ignorant to your own ways so I will indulge you:

1) Answers itself. it adds 3D.

2) Goal-post moving. I never made that argument and would never make that argument. In case you did not realize it, that is goal-post moving before I replied. And before you try to say it is not, just look at where the conversation started and where it is now, if it moved, it is because you tried to move it. Thank you for your time.

Well how many 3d games have done before what MH4 seems to be doing in that video.

  • Unassisted platforming (no double jumps or rocket-packs, no sticky/magnet jumps, no holding 'A' and watching the guy do the platforming, no reversing time or whatever other shit they put in these unhardcore game these days)
  • No surveying of terrain before platforming/climbing ( No time to do it with a giant Monster chasing you)
  • No camera work to guide you (Monster hunter will stick to that behind 3rd person view camera the entire time as it always has, the camera work in that vid is only for the cinematic feel of the trailer)
  • Harsh check-point system ( knowing Monster Hunter's hardcoreness, one small mistake is death, lose half the loot, and back to the start of the map)

Yeah the closest is probably only SM3dLand XD.

My bad Rol, that was the DS Lite. The DS actually launched in NA on November 21st 2004. LOL?

Using your logic, I could mention several 3D Mario, Mario Kart and Monster Hunter games that were released in either November or December to disprove that these 3DS games were launched to combat the PSV. So what's really the difference here?

The difference is, for your case, you need to have the date AND have all 3 fall on it the same timeframe (all topping the charts at the same time), in the same region (which hasn't happened before). Even just Mario and Mario Kart, I would be hard pressed to find that.

In my case, I need the date, and just 2 consoles launch at the same time, which has happened before (GC, Xbox).

For your case, and only the Mario/Mario Kart combo, let's go 2 gens back (up to SNES).

Region SNES (Used Mario all-stars) N64 (Mario 64) GBA  (Mario Advance) GC (Sunshine) DS  Wii (SMG, NSMB, SMG2)
NA MK: Sep '92  /  M: Aug '93 MK: Feb '97 /  M: Sep '96 MK: Aug '01  /  M: Jun '01 MK: '03  /  M: '02   MK: '05  /  M: '06

MK: '08  /

M: '07, '09, '10

Europe MK: Jan '92  /  M: Dec '93 MK:  Jun '97 /  M: Mar '97 MK: Sep '01  /  M: Jun '01 idem idem idem
Japan MK: Aug '92  /  M: Jul '93 MK: Dec '96  /  M: Jun '96

MK: Jul '01  /  M:  Mar '01

idem idem idem

The only case where it happens is on GBA. What could it have been countering? Anyway, it doesn't matter, I was just saying this was quite the move on Nintendo's part, something I hadn't really noticed before, probably because it didn't happen in this specific way (launching 3 megaton games at once) before.
