The fuck are you talking about?

I know MS is a great company, nay, Bill Gates is an extraordinary man, and all of Apple's success can be directly attributed to Bill Gates. And they charge because they want us to have a superior online system? Do you know how much money they make on their subscriptions? Many many millions more than they put into making it "an average" serverbase. What about proprietary drives and proprietary wifi adaptor? What were those for? To provide the best possible storage? The best possible wifi? No. These are all money making endeavors. I know you're thinking "that's business". And yes, you're right. But the difference is keeping customers happy. Does a charge keep customers happy for online? No. Does proprietary everything keep customers happy? No. They are obstacles that customers are willing to endure for the system they want. Big difference.

When it comes to the consoles, Sony probably does the best as they fund indie games, picking up new developers all the time, and trynig to bring as many games to the console as possible without any charge to us.

In the same way that Nintendo learned to be good to its handheld owners, so did Sony with its ps3. That is why both are at the height of each respective outlet.

Back so ages ago, when the Xbox 360 was just released, Pachter did a breakdown of the costs on an Xbox 360 HDD.  At that time I think it was 20 GB or it could have been around the time that Microsoft released the 120 GB.  There were actual costs involved in creating the HDDs.  A raw HDD would be shipped to one facility, have the games/demos, music, and videos installed on it, then get shipped to another facility where it would get assembled into the carriage it was mounted in, and then either packed in a blister package or sent to another facility for final assembly in an Xbox 360 console.  All these steps meant Microsoft wasn't making much profit at on the cost of a HDD, though it was making profit.

The Wi-Fi adapter was proprietary and thus more expensive because of how Microsoft designed the Xbox 360.  A portion of the Wi-Fi was built into each console, and a portion built into the accessory.  In fact, it's still done the same way today.  Open up an Xbox 360 S and you'll find a Wi-Fi module that unplugs internally.

The intention at the time was to offer a less expensive console, then offer a Wi-Fi accessory to those people who need it.  Without knowing the demand, I'm guessing the Wi-Fi adapter was always produced in small quanities, making it an expensive accessory.  You can argue that Wi-Fi should have been included all along, but the fact that Microsoft didn't include it and instead offered it as an accessory meant that they could sell the Xbox 360 cheaper than the PS3 and more competatively against the Wii.

No, Sony doesn't do the best to fund indie games on consoles, handhelds, PCs, or mobile.  Microsoft does a far better job for funding development on consoles, Valve/Steam does a better job for PCs by virtue of being the least expensive to capture the biggest market, no one does a good job with handhelds, and right now I would say Google with Android does a better job than Apple with iOS or Microsoft with XNA for mobile phones.  Could Sony break into the Android marketplace with the PlayStation Suite, possibly.

The problem Sony and Nintendo face is that unlike Microsoft, Google, or Apple, Sony and Nintendo are direct competators of indie developers.  While Microsoft has always competed in the software spectrum with other development studios, both with applications and games, it openly embraces third-party and independent developers.  So important were third-party developers to Microsoft that back before the Xbox 360 was released, Microsoft gathered up developers at a developers conference and asked them what they wanted in a console.  Even more importantly, developers helped shape the hardware available in the Xbox 360 as Epic and Gears of War are so famously creditted.

Has Sony learned from Microsoft's example?  It said so with the Vita, so we'll see.

I don't think Sony aquiring new development studios is done in the best interest of gamers, necessarily.  There are several examples of developers that produced exclusive games for Sony that weren't aquired by Sony and thus folded.  Not to mention, several of Sony's own first party studios that have closed in recent years.  There are examples of where this is the case with Microsoft as well.  The point is, it's business.  Studios that have ownership of IPs that Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo want are purchased.  Studios that aren't profitable for one reason or another are closed or sold off.  Aquiring studios doesn't mean what you think it means, however.

Name a company Microsoft, Nintendo, Activision, or EA has bought and turned around and "charged" gamers for that purchase.  That's a ludicrious statement.  Sony has so many exclusive games compared to Microsoft because Sony has so many first-party studios.  If those first-party studios aren't making games then they're costing Sony money.  If those games don't make a solid profit, they cost Sony money.  So, the games have to be good and they have to sell well.  Based on Meta Critic, Sony isn't hitting either of those marks so well.  Their exclusive games haven't been well rated and they haven't done particularly well either.  UC3 being an example that bucks that trend, but a rare one.

Worse for Sony, having so many first-party studios producing mediocre AAA games that don't sell well puts a strain on their overall bottom line.  In the end that's what's more important.  You can bitch about Microsoft charging for Xbox LIVE or making expensive accessories all you want, but the reality is they're a profitable company and they're in business to make money.  Sony has been doing everything it can to lose money in the last for years.  What is better for gamers?  A company that'll be around in the next 10 years, or a company that has to sell off it's businesses to survive or it goes under because of horrible business practices?  I personally think the former.

I'm not sure that Sony with the PS3 is at the height of anything.  While Sony is holding strong in Japan and a few other markets, in Europe its marketshare is slowly shrinking.  I'm not debating that it isn't still strong in Europe, just that it's shrinking.  The UK, once a bastion for the PS2 is now a Wii and increasingly Xbox 360 stronghold.  In several European nations the Wii soundly has outsold the PS3 in life-time sales, and the Xbox 360 continues to increase its sales.  Sony's marketshare in Europe is slowly shrinking and the PS3 and it's exclusives aren't doing much to help sell it.

If you were commenting on this a year ago, you'd probably have some traction, but after a year of the Xbox 360 widening the gap Sony is not at the height of anything yet.

Definitely not.

First of all, this debate about the more powerful system is getting old, both systems had advantages and disadvantages. Sony did just a very good marketing job at selling this console and the Cell architecture as being so good. Too bad they failed in that area after that (marketing) compared to the 2 "others guys"

And then, Sony is like any other company, only thing they care about is to make money and the guys making the decisions does not even know what a video game is, thinking otherwise would be kind of foolish.

There are two ways I could make money.

I could get a job and earn it.

or..

I could buy a gun and rob people.

My point is, there are different ways to "care about money". A way that shows you want to KEEP making the money your making, and a way to get as much as you can quickly before everything falls apart.

My point is that they are not using different ways to make money :)
Xbox Live vs Playstation Network is not an argument at all. The offering is different and the cost of Xbox Live has been a 1000 times justified by a lot of people so no need to start another flamewar about that.

And to follow your two exemples, I'm sorry but I hardly see Microsoft being in the second category. If anything, I would see Sony there for different reasons too.

Oh but they are.

Sony is pouring money into game development. Sony's #1 income comes from the games.

That's not the case for MS. In fact, I'd say they make more straight profit from XBL than any other profit stream.

This. On Bonus Round they were talking about the fact that Microsoft would rather ride on third parties who make large profits and profit off of their sales than make games themselves. They spend big money to make exclusive COD ads and rake in the money from there. They propery support only the top franchises on their console which are like only three in Forza, Gears and Halo. Gears is gone unless Epic decides to make it again. Sony doesnt have these problems, wondering where there next game is going to come from, because they are actually making them and involving themselves in the process. They aren't running their gaming sector like a gaming company. At this point I am sure Microsoft doesn't care if gamers buy their consoles as long as it sells because games sure as hell arent the first on their list unless it is for Kinect.

Not really. That only happened due to a huge shortage of XBox 360. There were no shortages of PS3. After the initial launch, because were actually returning them because they could sell them for a profit on EBay. That's a fact. Gamestop and Toys R. Us even had signs on their doors claiiming they had plenty of PS3 available for sale because they were overstocked. lol!! Sony also did a price cut on the PS3 just 6 months after launch. Another fact. It wasn't at $600 for long. Research is your friend. Nice one indeed. lol!!

even if that shortage did happened... (i am not from america so i don't really know how the launch wnt down in there) that argument is nothing compared with the fact that in the first year Xbox did not have any competition in terms of 7th generation consoles. Research? that was indeed very nice!

LOL yea, 360 didn't have any 7th gen competition, it only had PS2 to face during prime years, when few people were ready to move to the 7th generation.

Is there a problem?

And the number of posts it took me to post it is relevant...how?

It's relevant because you didn't realize it until later, yet claimed that you had noticed it already.

Okay...er, don't know why you're so desperate to get into arguments with me that you'll jump into a post between me and another poster but let me explain it before I take my leave.

. I posted the Futurama pic to jay's post because at first I thought he was being serious with his post but then after reading it again, the absurdity of thinking a company willingly lost billions in dollars, lost large marketshare and have third party companies in their total control because they can 'dominate at anytime they want' made me believe he was in fact joking.

. Jay answered my post and I told him  I don't believe he is being serious with his post.

It's...that simple. That's all it is. Nothing more. So let it go.

*comes back to the thread cause he was quoted* ehm.... *quickly leaves thread after the mess his post made*

Yes, by a mile. Let's compare the companies:

Nintendo:
- Hasn't made a top notch new IP since Pikmin on the Gamecube (Wii series hardly counts), just continually relies on proven franchises like Mario, Zelda and Metroid
- With the exception of Zelda SS, has completely left the Wii out to rot the past 2 years or so
- Focused entirely on the casual audience with lame add-ons, accessories and party games, and left the core Nintendo fan out to dry
- Haven't done anything to try to bring in 3rd party games
- Lame online network with horrible friend codes
- Don't bring in the latest technology, i.e. 1080p, 3D, etc. But I will admit this could be argued as a good thing, since it allowed them to launch it at $250

Microsoft:
- Care more about Kinect than making good new exclusives. I can count the good 1st party exclusives on my left hand: Halo, Forza, Fable....that's all I've got
- Released a console that's failure rate was astronomical early on. If they hadn't been in such a rush to release in 2005 they could have put more R&D into their console to make it better.
- I may be off on this one, but wasn't it discovered that for like $1 or $2 more per console they could have made the disk treys better so they don't scratch disks all the time? Disk scratching was a huge deal early on.
- Charge $60/year for online, which really isn't any better than PSN besides party chat and more user friendliness (plus they put ads all over the screen which Sony doesn't do)
- You have to pay extra for a Charge and play kit, Sony's controllers are all rechargable by an included USB cable
- The one key thing MS does do though is get all the good 3rd party games, and their console is easy to develop for so it gets better versions than the PS3

Sony:
- Sold their console at a loss so it was relatively more affordable for people
- Doesn't charge for online when nobody would blame them if they did
- Brings us the best technology (1080p, Blu-ray, built in wifi, etc. all from launch)
- Has the most new IP's, just this gen off the top of my head I can think of Heavy Rain, Resistance, Uncharted, LBP, Modnation racers and MAG...in addition to sequels of past gen games we all love
- They jumped on the motion controls bandwagon...but it hasn't become their primary focus like with Nintendo and MS. I think I've seen more ads for Uncharted 3 than I have for PS Move

All that being said, I only own a 360 right now. I'm willing to pay the $60/year since it's the console all my friends play and party chat is amazing.

I'm not saying any of the consoles are bad, but Sony definitely cares way more about their customers and don't make it as obvious that they just want our money.

Could not have said it any better Marks. :)

Long Story short. Sony has sacrificed alot more this gen then their competition has, And it was not all just to make a profit, But rather to ensure the PS3 would always have the best possible gaming experince out of the 3...

Nope, thanks to the growing technology and the road which Nintendo has made with wireless motion controls, their gonna want to target more than just "hardcore" gamers.

Overall, in truth they care about the money rather than the enjoyment and satisfaction of the average gamer.

Wouldn't even say they care about money much, continue to cut hardware when they should be looking for other methods to spur on growth, persist with trying to make their 7 straight year loss tv division a success, amongst other things.

I think Sony cares about marketshare, market presence and mindshare most of all. That's what their actions suggest anyhow.

You can't make a profit on high end tvs in an age where economies are in the shithole, and disparity is higher than it ever was. Rich people, despite having millions upon millions, only buy as many tvs as a person who makes 100k

Economies havent been in a shit-hole for 8 years.  Sony's TV division has lost money for 8 years.

I think Sony used to care about marketshare and market presence and being perceived as a higher end brand more than anything (note i say higher end brand... not a high end brand, they have never been that)... but... Sony have always worked on very, very tight margins, it doesnt take much of an outside influence to push that slight profit margin into the red.  This is why they are cutting costs, closing factories and reducing their product ranges.  They have to increase their profit margin so that in good years they make lots and in bad years they dont lose.

You can't make a profit on high end TV's? Just ask Samsung! They're laughing all the way to the bank. And yes - Samsung's high end TV's are just as good (if not better in many cases) than Sonys.

And Rich people only buy as many TV's (probably the most expensive  "high end" TV's on the market , because they're y'know - rich and all) as people on 100k a year (I don't know if that's "rich" but 100k a year would make me a hell of a lot richer than I am now!) - have you seen those episodes of MTV Cribs? Rappers with 50" LCD's in every room of their house? A TV (or two) for the yacht, holiday retreats, custom limo/hummer - of course those "poor" people buy just as many TV's right?

i dont really think so they only thing ive noticed is they try to one up the others with there media type which benefits the consumer b/c that results in more flexibility for devs, and added function for entertainment, ps1 could play cds, ps2 could play your dvds, and ps3 can play blu rays

if they really cared for the gamer we would of had a new controller design by now and a shit load of promising PS3 exclusives wouldnt of been canned or went multi

"Wait...wtf!

I used that pic because I thought you were joking or being sarcastic or something.

I didn't think you were actually being serious.

In fact, I still don't think you  are being serious, so just drop the act already."

Quite the contradiction.

I think you're embarassed by your interaction with both of us, which explains why you've turned tail and run from both, each time attempting to claim the higher ground with "you happy? Jeez" and "I didn't think you were being serious".

The first time, I caught you in two lies. 6 month price drop (which I admitted could simply be just an exaggeration), and signs saying they had "plenty" of stock because the were "overstocked" (in this case I asked for proof that you could not furnish), and backed down to "the signs said 'ps3 in stock here'", while ignoring the other comments I had.

Honestly what it looks like is that you were just talking a bunch of shit nonsense. Why? I don't know. Maybe you just harbor some hatred for people who say good thigns about sony, and bad things about MS. This is reinforced by you saying "I can play this game too" and then resorting to "MS donates money to charity". Really feeble argument; I can easily see why you were embarassed.

Hmmm... is this the same Sony that planted root kits in the computers of their customers?

The same Sony that categorically denied optical failures in the PS1 AND PS2 AND PS3 while Nintendo's hardware failure rate has been lower and MS extended their warranties?

The same Sony that denied having potentially harmful, exploding hardware?

The same Sony that has constantly TRIED to leverage their superiority in electronics to shove new formats down peoples throats... BETA (superior but costly and prone to breakage)... ATRAC (blech)?

NOPE. Sony doesn't care about Joe Average Gamer any more (or less) than Nintendo or MS do.
