Not getting involved in the other stuff but since when did Sony's stance on helping a few Indie developers become better than Microsoft's policy of actually providing free SDK's to Indie developers along with an entire section on Live to publish the content created.  If you're gonna bring up that point then Microsoft have Sony well and truly beaten on the contribution to the Indie scene now.

The XNA Games Creator Network is free to play with, but it isn't free to create an actual game that can be played on the console or sold via Xbox LIVE Indie Games.  For that, you need to pay a $99 annual subscription fee.

For the small-time independent developer, on consoles, there is no better place than the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE to create and sell video games.  Larger, independent developers publishing games via Xbox LIVE Arcade may have some hoops they need to go through to get their games out to the public, but I think XBLA has proven to be a great market for independent games on the console.

There is little argument that Steam isn't doing the same on the PC, however.

I think what you're missing here is that this thread isn't about Sony caring in the aspect of "want to do what's best for the customer", but it's about caring that they do right by the customer. This could be phrased as "they care about having us as customers". They want our money, so they do as much as they can to making sure they get it.

The same really can't be said about MS or Ninty. MS used to charge 10$ to change a gamertag. 10 freakin' dollars! The excuse was to prevent people from abusing a free name change system. OK so then make it 99 cents! They charge for Live! They charged 100$ for proprietary hard drives. They charged 100$ for proprietary wifi dongle! Hey, hey, now, I know...it's good business, and maybe Sony would have done the same...should have done the same. Create expensive proprietary drives, proprietary wifi, with just built in ethernet. But they didn't. Why? Who knows. People would have bought the system regardless and bought the upgrades if they wanted them. Wifi and hard drives were not a selling point.

So, in terms of getting the customer a great well made product, Sony did right. Nintendo did as well for the first 3-4 years, then stopped caring. MS didn't really this entire time. For example, the red ring. Sure, they extended warranties and replaced consoles with refurbs, but it would take 1-2 weeks to get your thing fixed. PSN was offline for two weeks. You could still play single player. What did Sony do? Give everyone free games and several months of PSN+, which also has more free games. I'd say sony cares. Maybe not in a caring for my wellbeing way, but in a "we are very careful about keeping our customers happy".

MS seems to take more of the stance of, "our customers will be happy", and Sony, "let's make sure our customers are happy".

None of this is meant to troll or insult. This is just a, perhaps exaggerated, recount of the actual events that happened.

It seems to me that you are just looking for good things about Sony and bad things about MS because Sony is your preferred company.

If I played that game too, I could just say MS is better because they give alot to charities and they charge us a fee for Live because they want us to have the best possible online service. Or I could say Nintendo is better because when they dropped the 3DS' price they gave early adopters free games and they have the most reliable hardware.

Then I could say Sony is not as good because they are charging us for proprietary memory cards with Vita and they over-priced their product.

All 3 companies do things  to keep their customers happy so that they continue to buy their products.

People in here are just looking for good things about their company to convince themselves they are the best.

Fact is, all 3 do what they can to keep their fanbase and customers happy. None is better than the other. Alot of bias going on in here.

The fuck are you talking about?

I know MS is a great company, nay, Bill Gates is an extraordinary man, and all of Apple's success can be directly attributed to Bill Gates. And they charge because they want us to have a superior online system? Do you know how much money they make on their subscriptions? Many many millions more than they put into making it "an average" serverbase. What about proprietary drives and proprietary wifi adaptor? What were those for? To provide the best possible storage? The best possible wifi? No. These are all money making endeavors. I know you're thinking "that's business". And yes, you're right. But the difference is keeping customers happy. Does a charge keep customers happy for online? No. Does proprietary everything keep customers happy? No. They are obstacles that customers are willing to endure for the system they want. Big difference.

Nintendo, is probably the closest. They make great games, have fair pricing on their games, and have very reliable hardware. However, they discourage third party competition. Of course, Nintendo knew YEARS before the wii came out what they were going to do. Their strategy was all pre-planned. Third parties had to make it up on the spot.Third parties had no idea what would sell, and Nintendo didn't do anything to help them. Good for business? Yes. Does it keep the customer happy? No. And the fact that they have almost completely abandoned development is especially infuriating. They stopped making games because one game is capable of selling 20million, and they don't want new titles to compete. New super mario wii came out over 2 years ago, with no sequel in sight. Why? Because people keep buying NSMB Wii. Good for business? Yes. Does it keep the customer happy? No, because someone who bought it over 2 years ago, hasn't been kept happy. Only the people who haven't bought the game become satiated. After all, why spend money developing games when one game will keep selling as long as you don'tmake a sequel. Ie; why buy nsmb 1, when nsmb 2 is out?

And yes, I agree with you that Vita's strategy is stifling. I don't like their proprietary card prices, and I don't like them pushing the 3g even though wifi to 3g price for hardware is negligible. In terms of the Vita, Sony is fucking up. But you know what? MS proved that you could sell unnecessarily overpriced addons to the gamer and get away with it. I don't like what Sony is doing, but I want the system, because it has the games that I want. Are they keeping the handheld gamers happy? No. Are they doing right by business? Yes.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I call it like I see it.

Nintendo is shitty to gamers on the wii. They are better with gamers on the 3DS.
MS is shitty to gamers on the 360, but they do right by providing the games their core gamers want, but that will change as kinect keeps getting bigger.
Sony is Great with PS3 owners, but they are shitty to PSV owners.

When it comes to the consoles, Sony probably does the best as they fund indie games, picking up new developers all the time, and trynig to bring as many games to the console as possible without any charge to us.

When it comes to handhelds, Nintendo does the best as they have learned a valuable lesson and are working hard to bring in third parties, and new developers.

In the same way that Nintendo learned to be good to its handheld owners, so did Sony with its ps3. That is why both are at the height of each respective outlet.

Hmmm...since when did they start doing that?

I thought I hadn't been up to date on the MS indie dev situation, and I guess I was right, they made some changes just last week. Here are the changes, and you can tell me whether they were being good to devs or not.

http://thecontrolleronline.com/2012/01/developers-on-changes-to-xbox-live-indie-games/

ON SIZE

"The first being a jump in the overall size limit of Indie games from 150MB to 500MB"

“I think the new size requirements help relax concerns about needing to cut corners on assets or gameplay features in order to fit into a specific size/price slot.  I didn’t think the old restrictions were all that big of a deal for the games I build but I’m all for anything that gives us more options when designing games. - Matt Davis

"Considering there are many full XBLA titles at, or around, 500MB I think this change will benefit Indie developers who subscribe to Davis’ mindset."

ON PRICE

"Previously, any game over 50MB had to be priced at 240 points($2.99) or 400 points ($4.99). I’ve always found this strange as the size of a game isn’t directly proportionate to the value or length. Microsoft has now raised the 80 point ($.99) ceiling to include any game under 150MB"

ON # OF GAMES

"The third change won’t directly impact gamers, but is no less important than the others. Indie Developers were previously limited to 10 titles on the Marketplace. This has now been upped to 20, which may help keep some Developers doing what they do on the Indie Channel for much longer than before."

So, before, devs were forced to limit the size of their games, were forced to price their games a certain way, and could only release a certain number of titles.

I don't know what else has been changing recently, but this is what came out recently:

"

Independents’ Day
This indie push from Sony comes at an interesting time, too. Microsoft’s indie games channel seems to be under a near-constant barrage of barbed words from developers and fans, and XBLA proper requires shouting your love for a publisher from the mountaintops–mountains of certification paperwork, that is. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s indie selection is something of a mythical creature. Sony’s not perfect, obviously, but at least with its highly publicized $20 million indie-focused Pub Fund, it’s trying.

“I’m always looking for something challenging,” SCEA Manager of Developer Relations Ted Regulski said.

Pat waxes lyrical on his Journey taster.

“And not challenging in the difficulty sense, but challenging in the sense of a topic, gameplay style, or subject matter that really hasn’t been breached before. Something a traditional third-party publisher would probably shy away from—like, ‘Ehhhh, I don’t know if there’s a market for that.’

“And if we think there could be a market for it, we’re happy to support them, help them get licensed, get them dev kits, and walk them through the process of getting their game on PlayStation. Especially with Pub Fund–that’s really where we’re looking for those challenging new experiences that are unique to the platform.”

Sony’s putting a lot on the line for these folks: time, reputation, and millions of dollars. I can understand, then, why it’d be tempting for Sony to yank the wheel from indie developers’ hands and plot a course for the closest mainstream-friendly payday it can find. But that absolutely isn’t the case."

Definitely not.

First of all, this debate about the more powerful system is getting old, both systems had advantages and disadvantages. Sony did just a very good marketing job at selling this console and the Cell architecture as being so good. Too bad they failed in that area after that (marketing) compared to the 2 "others guys"

And then, Sony is like any other company, only thing they care about is to make money and the guys making the decisions does not even know what a video game is, thinking otherwise would be kind of foolish.

The PS3 outsold the 360's first year, even with a $600 price tag. Look up the launch sales of both consoles.

good argument... didn't think of that...

nice one!

If both consoles sold at the same time there wouldn't be an argument about who is selling better. The PS3 is just playing catch up because they've sold more consoles in the time they've been around being its sixth year and the 360 on its seventh. Three major things the PS3 needs to overcome:

1. 360's value as a console (hardware, library, online etc)....which is well spoken for with its sales last year.

2. The hardest thing to beat which is the Kinect effect, not the 360 itself.

3. Microsoft marketing, which only shines light on a handful of games. Sony has too many games to make commercials for, so they need to reinvest.

Number one has been done. The other two are of little substance but are the largest causes of high sales.

You can twist any number to fit an agenda but there is only certain numbers that tell the full story.

The PS3 hasn't outsold any of its competitors.

The PS3 will not outsell its predecessor

The PS3 has cost Sony Billions that it'll never recoup

Im not twisting any words. This can be confirmed by Sonys statement that they have no wish to launch outside of a year window with Microsoft so people can look at what they both have to offer at the same time. Even they knew it. The year launch and Kinect saved Microsoft. The amount of hot titles on the PS3 eclipses the 360, the multimedia does as well and the online is free. The 360 in the first year had unrivaled access to third parties and Microsoft cut deals (which was smart). Simple. Think about it. What if Sony said yes to Kinect tech instead of turning it down? What would Microsoft have?

There are two ways I could make money.

I could get a job and earn it.

or..

I could buy a gun and rob people.

My point is, there are different ways to "care about money". A way that shows you want to KEEP making the money your making, and a way to get as much as you can quickly before everything falls apart.

Xbox Live vs Playstation Network is not an argument at all. The offering is different and the cost of Xbox Live has been a 1000 times justified by a lot of people so no need to start another flamewar about that.

And to follow your two exemples, I'm sorry but I hardly see Microsoft being in the second category. If anything, I would see Sony there for different reasons too.

Yes, by a mile. Let's compare the companies:

Nintendo:
- Hasn't made a top notch new IP since Pikmin on the Gamecube (Wii series hardly counts), just continually relies on proven franchises like Mario, Zelda and Metroid
- With the exception of Zelda SS, has completely left the Wii out to rot the past 2 years or so
- Focused entirely on the casual audience with lame add-ons, accessories and party games, and left the core Nintendo fan out to dry
- Haven't done anything to try to bring in 3rd party games
- Lame online network with horrible friend codes
- Don't bring in the latest technology, i.e. 1080p, 3D, etc. But I will admit this could be argued as a good thing, since it allowed them to launch it at $250

Microsoft:
- Care more about Kinect than making good new exclusives. I can count the good 1st party exclusives on my left hand: Halo, Forza, Fable....that's all I've got
- Released a console that's failure rate was astronomical early on. If they hadn't been in such a rush to release in 2005 they could have put more R&D into their console to make it better.
- I may be off on this one, but wasn't it discovered that for like $1 or $2 more per console they could have made the disk treys better so they don't scratch disks all the time? Disk scratching was a huge deal early on.
- Charge $60/year for online, which really isn't any better than PSN besides party chat and more user friendliness (plus they put ads all over the screen which Sony doesn't do)
- You have to pay extra for a Charge and play kit, Sony's controllers are all rechargable by an included USB cable
- The one key thing MS does do though is get all the good 3rd party games, and their console is easy to develop for so it gets better versions than the PS3

Sony:
- Sold their console at a loss so it was relatively more affordable for people
- Doesn't charge for online when nobody would blame them if they did
- Brings us the best technology (1080p, Blu-ray, built in wifi, etc. all from launch)
- Has the most new IP's, just this gen off the top of my head I can think of Heavy Rain, Resistance, Uncharted, LBP, Modnation racers and MAG...in addition to sequels of past gen games we all love
- They jumped on the motion controls bandwagon...but it hasn't become their primary focus like with Nintendo and MS. I think I've seen more ads for Uncharted 3 than I have for PS Move

All that being said, I only own a 360 right now. I'm willing to pay the $60/year since it's the console all my friends play and party chat is amazing.

I'm not saying any of the consoles are bad, but Sony definitely cares way more about their customers and don't make it as obvious that they just want our money.

Oh but they are.

Sony is pouring money into game development. Sony's #1 income comes from the games.

That's not the case for MS. In fact, I'd say they make more straight profit from XBL than any other profit stream.

I don't spend time on online arguments that I think aren't worth my time. That's all. Don't take it so personally.
