Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo, please loosen Retro's leash this time.

While I would like to see Retro to make a new IP (and possibly one that is 'not Nintendo like' as well), I don't think the leash is a problem. It's probably something more to do with size of the studio, and therefore the quantity of games they produce in a generation. According to Wikipedia, Retro had only 60 staff last year; to contrast Rare had 200 (in that case maybe too many cooks spoil the broth!).

Retro are compared by many to Rare in their 5th gen heyday, so I'll use this comparison. Rare developed loads of games during the 5th gen: Perfect Dark x2, DK64, Blast Corps, Goldeneye, Conker x2, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo x2 to name some, but not all. To compare, what have Retro done this gen? Metroid Prime 3, Trilogy, DKCR, helping with Red Steel 2.

Also to be fair, Nintendo is letting Retro work on their most prized franchise. First the revival of Metroi, then Donkey Kong Country, and now they let them work on Mario Kart? It's only a matter of time before they let Retro work on their own IP, but for now I'm still happy, and I think they are too.

Do you have links on these alleged Retro people leaving? (Literally, I'd like to read up on them and rumours for leaving). And does Nintendo own Eternal Darkness?

"According to several articles I found, lots of key staff left after MP3, and several Retro employees were unhappy working on DKCR. Even more staff left after DKCR. Retro wanted to make a Zelda spin-off, and several new, mature IPs, and they were all terminated by Nintendo."

umm i dont know where you are getting your bullshit info on, but only 1 or 2 members left after prime 2 and the entire retro team chose Donkey Kong

http://www.1up.com/news/retro-studios-loses-key-metroid - Three of the highest employees left to form Armature Studio. According to Retro's Linkedin page, three more employees went to Armature at some point.

Mike Wikan, Senior Game Designer left to go to id Software

One other guy left to go to 343

Also, you say that they were content with Donkey Kong, but how  likely is it that they were content when Nintendo hired them to make mature stuff, and Retro wanting creative freedom? DK isn't either of those.

They might not want to put that on their resume.

A decent sized leash, as others have said, keeps developers on their toes. Optimum video game development occurs when developers face just the right amount of adversity, whether that adversity is hardware limitations, executive demand, hard deadlines, or low budget. Too much adversity, and you get unhappy workers who either leave or see their output diminish, too little adversity, however, and you get pointless crap that nobody asked for

This extends to most art forms as well. Anyone up for the Star Wars Prequels?

This, all of this. I'm not saying that Nintendo should let them go off and do whatever they want, but they shouldn't hold Retro's hand through everything. A bigger degree of creativ freedom, along with the guidance that most other developers don't get should lead Retro to further greatness.

You miss one Raven Blade for Gamecube!!

See this was gonna be a game to appeal to older folks but the way folks treated Nintendo with Gamecube it was canceled.
