While I would like to see Retro to make a new IP (and possibly one that is 'not Nintendo like' as well), I don't think the leash is a problem. It's probably something more to do with size of the studio, and therefore the quantity of games they produce in a generation. According to Wikipedia, Retro had only 60 staff last year; to contrast Rare had 200 (in that case maybe too many cooks spoil the broth!).

Retro are compared by many to Rare in their 5th gen heyday, so I'll use this comparison. Rare developed loads of games during the 5th gen: Perfect Dark x2, DK64, Blast Corps, Goldeneye, Conker x2, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo x2 to name some, but not all. To compare, what have Retro done this gen? Metroid Prime 3, Trilogy, DKCR, helping with Red Steel 2.

What? they helped with Red Steel 2? huh never knew that

Yeah, they helped Ubisoft with the controls:

They might not want to put that on their resume.
