"According to several articles I found, lots of key staff left after MP3, and several Retro employees were unhappy working on DKCR. Even more staff left after DKCR. Retro wanted to make a Zelda spin-off, and several new, mature IPs, and they were all terminated by Nintendo."

umm i dont know where you are getting your bullshit info on, but only 1 or 2 members left after prime 2 and the entire retro team chose Donkey Kong

http://www.1up.com/news/retro-studios-loses-key-metroid - Three of the highest employees left to form Armature Studio. According to Retro's Linkedin page, three more employees went to Armature at some point.

Mike Wikan, Senior Game Designer left to go to id Software

One other guy left to go to 343

Also, you say that they were content with Donkey Kong, but how  likely is it that they were content when Nintendo hired them to make mature stuff, and Retro wanting creative freedom? DK isn't either of those.
