Forums - PC - AMD FX 8-core

I hope it's available soon, gonna be supply constrained for a while. I am getting the strongest one in the Fx series.

Me!
I'm waiting to see what they actually bring to the table, and once I do, the superior encoding/emulation CPU gets my purchase. So right now it's a heavy fight between the i7 2600k and the FX-8170. I hope for the latter, since I do miss AMD CPU's, I didn't have one since the Athlon 64 x2!

It will work in a lot of current motherboards, you need to see whether there is a BIOS update for yours.

True but limits some functionality and is actually some not "a lot", some of which are big selling points of the acrchicture like new power management features and there are some issues arround power which could cause problems down the line. And to top it off AMD is not officially supporting using AM3 boards so it's down to the mobo manufacturer to make sure it works etc. High end boards may be ok but a mid to low end board like mine is unlikely to be updated and I am not looking to upgrade any time soon.

Link to where it's stated it limits features?

Otherwise yeah.

I'm not and I am a huge AMD fan. After five years of waiting for a new architecture it comes up short to Intel in every way.

I've heard the FX-8170 is supposed to be clocked at 4GHz for each core...

@yum123

At least they didn't show Duke Nukem Forever in the demo reel xD

Isn't that a bit unfair? In recent years, Intel has released a new socket for every new gen of CPUs (s1366, s1155, s1156 and the coming s2011) and people didn't complain. Why can't AMD do it?

You could buy an AM3+ socket motherboard months ago while keeping your Phenom II or Athon II CPU and now just drop the a new Bulldozer CPU and it will work.

OT: I hope AMD delivers, as that would mean competition... so we (consumers) will win. And it looks like they might have something...

I knew the FX-8150 would crush the i7's...

AMD only really had one architecture that was superior to Intel's offerings at the same time period. Otherwise, they've always done well when it comes to price/performace ratio. I'm kinda hoping that that's the case with this one but I didn't think any official benchmarks had been released yet (the AMD marketing pics don't count ).

I wouldn't put too much trust into these benchmarks just yet. Wait for anandtech, tom's, etc.

In fact, I believe that Sandy Bridge is likely to retain its crown anyway.

In single threaded aplications Sandy Bridge will win easily. But for AMD, being on par with an i7 980X CPU that costs more than twice is a huge success, specially with a lower power consumption and a better graphics part.
