Why wouldn't you? Isn't nice to be able to talk with a group of friends while playing any video-game? You have always the option to restrict the number of players in the party, or even mute the person you don't want to hear.

Hi, I'm the non-talkative type who just plays single player games. With that said, when play MP games, I always keep my mic cut and everyone else muted. Even when I played MagBeta and Uncharted 2MP, I didn't like chatting unless it was unavoidablly necessary.
Why the need to talk to people? Especially those who aren't playing the same game as you? I can understand wanting to talk to someone playing the same game as you e.g in co-op or just "banter" in versus but talking to some guy playing portal whilst you are playing COD is beyond me, becuase if I were playing a game with story or heck, a single player game like Pro Evo, I wouldn't want some random talking nonsense to me because I want to focus on my game at hand.

I guess I'm just a better multitasker than you lol jk. I understand not wanting to talk to someone playing a engaging story or watching a movie, but in multiplayer(which I mainly do) or If I'm sitting at the dashboard waiting for something to download, I like to talk to people. When I played Portal 2 I was able to keep conversation at the same time concentrating on the game, no problem. Some friends join a party and they want to know about the game I'm playing like I was doing in Portal. I guess I'm just use to talking to people while playing a game because I do it a lot now.
I would understand for someone that mainly plays single player games or has never used the feature very much might not care for it, but I have done it so much now it doesn't distract me when playing a game. For the most part, when I'm in a party with someone we usually talk about gaming not just out of the blue stuff. I know talking to you, your not the general audience, but I'm sure most PS3 owners would love to have this feature on PSN.

You don't own a PS3...
And everything you just said is possible on the PS3, for most online games I have played on the 360, party chat is blocked if you join up with friends.
And if there is an annoying kid...mute button.

I myself know for a fact that the people in my PSN friends list I know IRL do not have a mic or barely ever use it (I don't really use it either) and the people from my clan have a chatbox we talk in.
Dedicated chatbox > CGC
Less PS3 owners have headsets anyway, it's not that important.
And I love how people mention teamwork with the mics, I have NEVER EVER seen anyone use any kind of teamwork in any COD on XBL
Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous
Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5, Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.
Party chat is like hanging out in a vent server, it's fun and social. Good unless you are a basement dwelling fatass aspie weeaboo who is forever alone IRL and online.

Thats some pretty dumb generalisation. Either you talk with cross game chat or you are a fatass aspies weeaboo who is foreever alone in real life. In the same line of thought, if you use party chat you dont have enough friends in real life.

What I don't get is what's so pressing that you have to talk to that person whilst your console is on?
If my console is background downloading and I have no real interest in using it at the time then I either switch it to fold or switch it to standby before moving on to something else. I suppose maybe it's because I don't particularly know about 80% of my list but the rest that I do know, I don't feel its necessary to converse with them extensively whilst playing the same game let alone playing completely different games.

The only game that has party chat blocked is MW2.
I don't buy this. The ps3's OS still uses more overall ram than the 360's.
Now, it may be that, currently, they cannot allocate ram to cross game voice chat given what they're using in other areas, but I wouldn't be surprised if they could further decrease the OS's ram footprint like they've been doing all generation, thus allowing them to implement voice chat down the road.
They just freed up several megabytes of ram for developers to use earlier in the year.
