Forums - Nintendo - The Nintendo Wii U tablet-style controller will not be sold separately from it new HD console?

This sounds bad, but, I do have 4 wii motes. I'm not sure what Nintendo is thinking right now, I hope they change their minds on this decision before fans like me start to change their minds on buying the WiiU,

This sounds suspicious since the full button layout will no doubt be used for a lot of games. And what if the thing breaks? They have to sell separate Wii U controllers.

For instance, what do they expect from people wanting to do, oh, say, 4-player FPS titles on one system or 2-player Madden games?

Been telling people this console is doomed to fail

So, from the perspective of the quality of existence, is what you gain by being right greater than you being wrong?  Are you planning on having a party 5 years down the road if what you are predicting is correct?

Yes, because the direction the industry and Nintendo with it is moving in is a direction where gaming will stagnate, and wither, the alternative direction thatwas what the Wii and DS represented was a direction in which gaming became a true mainstream media.

Its good to see Nintendo fail with the 3DS, and Wii U, as it will likely mean that there is a sea change in the company and the industry sooner, perhaps tossing out the old fools who currently run the place and replacing them with people who actually listen to the market.

What exactly is this direction you advocate, outside of the old pattern the industry followed in the past, with everying being reduced to a single controller that grew more and more complicated with each generation, and with an increased focus on graphics, while the amount of genres decreases until they all become variants on FPS?

If the 3DS and U fail, that means we are back to the OLD controller schemes and a focus on the videogame industry wanting to be more and more like Hollywood, but involving crosshairs.  The industry is now FULL of supposed "experts" like Pachter who supposedly "listen" to the market and keep piling up more and more of the same.  This approach you advocate, gives the world a flood of music games, with studios going under.

You want to know what the market wants?  It wants to be entertained.  And your idea of not bothering to do anything with the interface doesn't help.  Supposedly listening to the market is why EA decided to take out a global conquest mode from Kane's Wrath, because apparently the suits at EA said market research told them "turn-based strategy doesn't fit the demographic of the 360".  Well, in the end Civ: Revolution outsold Kane's Wrath.

Nintendo, at this point and time, is the only ones leading (in the videogame front.  In technology, it is them and Apple mostly).  They at least give people more of what in the end is wanted.  Want to know what the U does?  It gives consumers the ability to allow they kid to still play their system, while they regain control of the living room.  This approach shows FAR more respect for the consumer and the market than Microsoft or Sony, who want people to believe their console is supposed to NEVER be turned off, and let's keep shoving more and more stuff in it.

If you don't like Nintendo, who DO you want?  Do you want Kotick of Activision to launch their own console and start charging a monthly fee to play Modern Warfare online?  I am curious who you think has a clue as to what to do.  Michael Pachter?

So was Wii and DS a failure, nope, so how is it about old controller schemes and increased graphics?

3DS and Wii U are not a continuation of the DS and Wii, no matter how Nintendo names them, the whole point of the Wii and DS, was to integrate gaming more with people's lives, to bring gamers, together and to make it  a more mainstream form of media b competiting with all other forms of entertainment, Wii U and 3DS do not do that, if anything they are steps backwards from the DS and Wii.

To be a great success in the tech industry you need leadership with vision, and vision only seems to come from the actual product-designers (in this case, the developers), but even then only from the developers who really pioneered the industry in the first place. You see it in Apple with Steve Jobs. In this industry, you also see what happens when the real, hard numbers business-types take over. You get Activision, monster profits, and brand-names ground into the dirt like fine powder, and a company on the whole with a bland and toothless image.

Now if Nintendo could find the *right* businessperson, who could gently correct the company's problems without radically reorienting, then we'd have something, but likely they would find Japanese Kotick

When you are doing product development and releasing a product, and want to beat your competition, you do NOT decide you will follow market demographics and surveys, and try to poll the people on what you want.  What you do is listen to what they really want, and formulate unique solutions no one else saw, so that you are first to market doing things differently, and taking charge.  Nintendo did NOT get where it was by following what everyone else did.  When it followed the whole Gamecube mentality, which is them doing catch up, it ended up failing in the market.  Only by really addressing the wants ot consumers, and entertaining and doing exactly what they discussed at the press conference, do they show leadership, and get the others to follow.  And you need to guees right and have luck.  Nintendo shows leadership totally missing from Microsoft and Sony at this point.  Sony is shoving 3D down the throats of everyone, with better graphics and so on, with Vita (it is cool) merely being touch taken to another level.  And Microsoft?  Sheesh, what is Kinect but merely motion control done to an even more extreme level.

As for a Japanese Kotick, if they took over Nintendo, they would try to find a way to release a bunch of overpriced expansion packs for Zelda, and also end up ramrodding Wii Music down the throats of everyone, trying to kill off the music industry with it.

Of course it will. How would you substitute broken controlles otherwise?

Above: still the best game of the year.

So... Ninty isnt cramming 3d down our throats with 3DS?? Double standards much???

I'm not sure what you are saying here.  They will all work with the new console.  All at the same time too.

Miyamoto said in an interview that they are looking for programming techniques to make it possible to play with more than one controller simultaneously.

Honestly this is a make it or break it for me, for Smash Brothers is one of the main reasons I buy Nintendo systems.

Why? You need 4 screens to play SB? It's been said already it will support Wiimotes, this means also the Classic controller.

Ugh. How many freakin' controllers are you supposed to buy? 4 Classic controllers just to play Smash Bros.? That's a bad joke.

Yes it seem like a lot, and actually it is a lot but you could also consider...

-Very often this gen Nintendo has bundleds controllers an other periphericals with games.

-A wiimote+classic controller costs about as much as a dualshock3, add 10$ if you want Wiimote+.

-if you want to add 3 players, you need 3 controllers what's different from any other console?

-You would prefer to spend something like 100$x3 or more to have 4WiiU controllers?

-From what demos and concepts are showing, the console will use wiimotes by the default not only the new controller, so probably a wiimote and a nunchuk will be bundled. (I think we all agree that a WiiUsports game is a given)

-If you are already a Wii owner you already have some wiimotes, nunchucks, and maybe even classic controllers.

-If you consider that more traditional games will come out for the console as well (Tekken for example) classic controllers will be useful for more games.

YOU ARE MISSING THE WHOLE POINT.

Your statements are mostly based on IF's and YOUR OPINIONS. Don't get me wrong here bro you are entitled to your opinion, BUT. $100 for a Wii-U remote? Are you kidding me bro? Just becasue the only thing different between it and a Wii Remote is a screen and slightly better tech? You can purchase a new DS Lite for around that.

If I don't own a Wii, and I buy a Wii-U, I want four Wii-U controllers or at least the option of pluging in Gamecube controllers so that I may play Smash Brothers the way its supposed to be played. Oh and a Wii-U controller would more likely be $50 not $100.

NINTENDO

nintendo forever . . .

to all those worried about gamecube controller support, this video here shows a hack made by a user that connects the cube controller to the wiimote, making it appear to the system as a classic controller. You lose rumble and a few buttons (home, minus, ZL) but otherwise it seems to work fine.

I wouldn't be surprised if a third party produces the custom circuit needed for this in a compact form factor by the time Wii U launches...
