Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: And the reason of why we didn't have achievements is...

Only geeks and otaku want achievements.

Aren't those the same thing?

That's fair, however, Nintendo would absolutely benefit from having it. People buy many games just for the sake of sucking up their achievements/trophies...

Nintendo doesn't like giving choices to their consumers.

Choice? As far as I know I don't have the choice to disable trophies on my PS3 or achievements on my 360 (if I could I'd do it).

You have the choice to ignore them or use them to your benefit.

You have two options to choose from, Nintendo give you none.

No, you can't really ignore them. Also: Ignoring is not a choice provided by the console manufacturers, it's a choice in people's mind. Disabling achievements/trophies on the other hand is an option not provided by Microsoft/Sony within the system. The only way to actually disable them is having your console constantly offline as far as I know.

Benefit? Only if you consider an increasing number as a benefit.

BTW: With the 3DS Nintendo plans to give people an actual option which in my opinion is even more devious than achievements/trophies: 3DS coins, which are used to unlock free content (if I understood the concept correctly).

I'm not a fan of any of these ideas (achievements/trophies/3DS coins), but on the 3DS at least I seem to have the actual option to never use it, not just to try to ignore it.

You can at least rig your 3DS to the hamster wheel for the coins...

Agreed. A game should be fun, not just so you get some useless (in my eyes) reward at the end

Saying that, however, I have gone and done stuf I would never have done before because of acheivements, so...

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Rubbish. Achievements arnt there to tell you how to play the game, they're to prolong teh game and they do a good job.

I play through the game once, without even thinking about achievements. Then I'll go through again to get the rest of the achievements I missed.

I wouldn't have touched Bioshock 2 multiplayer without achievements, but I did, and played for hours and loved it.

This is just Nintendo trying to justify why they won't do them.

I'm not crazy about them.... but...... they really add something.

I mean, I like completing them in casual Apple games, so why not in Zelda?

You can disable achievements notifications and are never forced to look at them, so yes you can ignore them.

All this is is Nintendo taking it upon themselves to tell its consumers what they should like.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

In a nutshell, he said that unlockables > achievements, what is true, at least for the expanded audience.

mm could be, but not all like achievements.. it's not that important just as long as you enjoy what you're playing, THAT would never be taken
