Stupid reason is stupid.

In a nutshell, he said that unlockables > achievements, what is true, at least for the expanded audience.

That's true as long as you have collectables, but they're not in every game. Plus, they could just make achievements a way to unlock something, in-game or for the console, so this argument is pretty pathetic. And I don't own a PS3 or 360, so I've not been a huge supporter of these achievements until now.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

I agree. A good game is about having fun in any way you want, not making a checklist.

That's one way to look at it. But I don't think that's how the masses see it.

For example, my sister recently got a 360 with Kinect and she plays Dance Central and Zumba all the time. Most notably on Dance Central after a few weeks when she did all the dances even at their highest difficulties. She felt there wasn't much left to do but buy DLC.

When she got to that point I showed her the Achievment list. I explained the ones she earned by just playing the game and how to get many others. Needless to say, she is getting much more value out of it and having fun simply because the achievments gave her something work towards.

Hence, most people just see them as goals to attempt on games they already enjoy. I assure you the masses aren't buying games because they just want to do some checklist.

Um, the last sentence WAS my point.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

The problem is they turn gaming into more of an application, that's a huge change from the entertainment industry it is currently a part of.

Good, then we agree.

I guess for me it already is, I play with the need of completing something. For example I abandoned Civilization IV because you had just to play and play, without any sort of ending. The same for The Sims or Sim City. Or Animal Crossing.

Nail. On. Head.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

On the contrary, I do think achievements actually add an element of surprise (hidden trophies for example) and takes the game further as you will stick to the game longer to unlock them. Similarly, you will have to play better an better to unlock the most difficult ones, so skill and challenge are ehanced as well. To Nintendo, it's just that achievements wouldn't be cost effective, as they keep targeting casual customers who don't need it.
