Everybody said what I wanted to say...
What? Me? Just give me achievement that actually means something/to get. That's all.

I don't know, can you show them off to your internet buddies and feel more of a man because of that?
Nintendo probably should implement something like that, as apparently a lot of people do care about that. But again, I wonder if all these users will actually buy a Wii, or just want to fill their "Nintendo fail" post quota.
Side note: If someone knows how to disable the achivement/trophy notification in the PS3, can you please tell me how.

Really? You would brag about a virtual reward for playing a videogame? I hope you guys aren't using these as pickup lines. =P

lol I remember when I was in high school my friends and I would brag about who got all the whistles in SMB3 or how fast could one win SMB, how many perfects in SF2, stuff like that. But it was just based in the honor system. Now with everything being online you can have proof of your accomplishments.

My gripe is they are in every game. I'd prefer them to be limited to games that suit them, such as sports, etc. Or if they must be mandatory then in pure single player games they should arise naturally from the gameplay.
For example the achievement in AC : Brotherhood for jumping on a beam from a horse is pure horseshit. They game never really needs that mechanic and it doesn't arise naturally - I can only presume that the points whores take time to find a beam and jump up and down on it until they get the Trophy/Achievement.
I would also like the option to surpress their notification. I don't think it should be taken away as choice is good but I want the choice to do so. I find it very off putting in most games I play to have a notification pop up. I tend to play offline games that are story driven - and it breaks immersion. I hate the idea, as an example, that while playing something like The Last Guardian a little sound will ding and I'll be notified I've just fed my creature it's thirtieth barrel of food.
To be honest I do think some games - Heavy Rain, The Last Guardin, ICO come to mind - don't suit them at all and here I fully get where Nintendo are coming from. For the sake of compliance that all titles need them with these titles they're bolted on where they simply don't fit.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Hopefully Ueda shares your distaste of the idea and they try to work out some idea like Heavy Rain where you get the trophy at the end of the chapter, maybe they could give you the trophies as you sat down at a save point. I really liked that Quantic Dream thought to keep the notifications from distracting the player during emotional moments. The best solution would obviously be to be able to turn notifications off on the hardware side but I haven't found any option to do that for the PS3.
OT: I do have to say to those that agree with Nintendo on this one, that reasoning of unlockables being better only works if they are mutually exclusive, but since you can quite obviously have both and many games prove it (most recent examples I've played were NBA Jamand LBP2) it's just a poor excuse for not having them. If they don't think most of their userbase want it that's fine, but the reasoning in the OP is just crap.

Heavy Rain's solution worked well, and I'm really hoping Ueda insists on something similar not just with Last Guardian but with the HD Ico/SOTC. Those games simply don't benefit in any way I can see from Trophies, but I'll settle for having disruption minimized.
I know the basic concept on consoles is to simplify but I think they could stretch the interface - now that both PS3/360 have lots of options for extended services - to have a simple notify/supress setting. That way you could supress the notification and if you want check afterwards any Trpohies, etc. you got.
I don't mind 'em in principle and can see the appeal, particularly for online, sports, etc. where the whole boast element makes sense. But really, for a lot of SP games they don't fit and are only applied as a log of what you've done - yup, I've finished Chapter 2 of FFXIII and yup, there's a little Trophy to say I really did finish Chapter 2 or to supposedly extend gameplay - for example when you've finished AC:Brotherhood you can pass the time jumping from horses to beams and back again!

Thats right. I know this one asshole that I work with that bought Hannah Montanna just to get some retarded achievement nonsense.
The guy is 27 years old.
