Feel free to flame her as much as you want. Actually I encourage you to do so because I disagree with her. I'm a center-left, pro-european guy with muslim and immigrant friends. I always thought Merkel was a good chancellor but she lost me with the debate about financially supporting Greece when she showed, well, nationalist tendencies. (Don't confuse this with "Nazi", though )
Just to give some more insight: For weeks now the german media has gone crazy about the possibility of a far-right party emerging (like in many parts of western Europe) because some conservatives feel Merkel isn't conservative enough. I guess this is her trying to get right-wing voters back but as I said I never would've expected Merkel herself to actually do this. But her governing coaltion is polling below 35% right now (< 30% Conservatives (CDU) and < 5% Liberals (FDP) - at the 2009 elections the two parties got 34% and 14% of the vote, respectively. ) and she is in danger of loosing the regional elections in South-West Germany (Baden-Württemberg) to the Greens (yes, the greens ) and I guess she's very worried.

Oh my. The last thing Western Europe needs is parties as far right as those Republicans/Tea Party in the US. And who are those Greens you talk about? Some sort of hippie party?

I agree about the right-wing parties. Although it has to be noted they are not anti-european, just anti islamic culture. It's really strange if you think about it.
The Greens actually were some sort of hippie-party during the early 80's but since their time in government from 1998 to 2005 (as the small coaltion partner of the Social Democrats) they've become more like traditional parties. They are currently polling above 20% in most polls. In Baden-Württemberg (South-West Germany) they are currently polling above 30% in polls regarding the regional elections which will be held in March next year.
Basically the Greens are against nuclear power and want the economy to be "greener" (more eco-friendly), they are a center-left party, are very pro immigration (the leader of the Greens is a muslim with turkish parents), very pro Europe and want the society to become more liberal (full rights for homosexuals, for instance).
