Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD to STOP reporting monthly hardware sales (Starting right NOW) :(

http://www.vg247.com/2010/10/12/npd-to-stop-reporting-monthly-hardware-unit-sales-figures/

NPD Group has said it’s to stop releasing monthly hardware unit sales figures for the US, and instead the public will have to get the information from the console holders.

The change is effective immediately: the NPD release this Thursday, October 14, won’t contain the pertinent hardware information.

NPD executive director David Riley denied, however, that the move is likely to damage clear reporting and analysis of the US market.

“No, it won’t,” the boss told VG247. “Clients can release their figures, which we can verify, but it shouldn’t be up to NPD to release these figures.

“Our corporate publishing guidelines changed, but nothing has changed client-side.”

The move means that none of the hardware manufacturers are obliged to release their monthly US sales figures, but are “permitted” to do so, and will be “supported” to do so by NPD.

NPD will also be changing the format the videogame retail sales data to the following:

  • Removal of monthly hardware unit sales figures
  • Ashift in the Top 10 software from sku level with unit sales for the Top 5, to Top 10 software at the title level with no unit sales
  • Revised footnote explaining that the monthly retail data reflects new physical purchases, not total consumer spend (digital, subscriptions, mobile games, rentals, used or social network games). The NPD Group will release a total consumer spend report to press on a quarterly basis
  • Monthly analysis from NPD industry analyst, Anita Frazier, will include software sales figures at both the sku and title level for various new releases

The changes are to “address the changing sales landscape as well as updates to NPD’s corporate publishing policies”, so the only way we will learn of the hardware units sold is through the clients who retain the data, i.e. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony.

Good riddance!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

this again?

I'd bet good money that someone on NEOGaf leaks the numbers until NPD starts releasing them publicly again.

so if i have this right, only MS knows how much MS sold according to NPD, and only Sony knows how much Sony sold according to NPD, and the same for Nintendo.  So unless all three sources decide to release their numbers we won't get a complete (if any) picture of NPDs hardware sales estimate?

Holy freaking Hell, they're getting rid of numbers altogether in their quarterly public reports?

Oh God

Oh God what if NeoGAF sales-age starts using VGChartz

yes and no.

Anyone who pays for NPD numbers knows how many units each system sold and how much eash SKU of software sold. However, the only people who can publish NPD hardware numbers to the general public are the hardware manufacturers themselves.

Expect the company with those most sales in any given month reveal, and the one with the lowest to not.

So any website reporting those numbers isn't really allowed to do so?

Things would happen. Bad things. Maybe this little network will be flooded with neogaf users, meaning the ragnarock for VGChartz :(

Above: still the best game of the year.
