"Both formats are pretty much irrelevant at the moment. I'm watching excellent quality HD movies/shows now - by using a DVD player that upsamples to 1080i, supports DIVX (and other formats) and has a USB port.
Our TV channels now broadcast in HD digital - and thats all free of course.
...
In short, the HD disc formats just don't provide enough upside from the current DVD format. Once the price comes down to something much more mass market, both formats will start to have more significant sales - and maybe more of an impact.
At the moment, you are talking about 5% of the total revenue from a DVD release."
Upscaling has nothing on native hi def people, once you compare the two you will know what I am talking about.

So far, Blu ray has the advantage in studio support, software and hardware sales. And we will see in a few years how much penetration there will be between both formats. |
Pretty soon the whole world will have HD TV's, and dvd's dont look pretty on them.

It's the same logic by which the PS3 and the 360 aren't competing with the Wii.

That's exactly right once people start seeing the difference between standard and hi def they will definately switch as soon as they can afford to.

I'm german, that's europe. I've heard about HD-DVD. If I go to a shop, I can see two small (about the same size) shelfes for HD-DVD and BluRay and gigantic shelfes for DVD. Some european studios support HD-DVD. So no HD-DVD outside of US? Think again. When we look to asia, we can see another contender: EVD (Enhanced versatile disc). Chinese studios don't want to pay license fees into foreign countries.

I get to play games like Uncharted and watch movies like Pirates of the Carribean and Harry Potter in HD. Sucks to be you. :| |
Sucks to be me? While you play Uncharted and watch Harry Potter in HD, I'll use the $600 dollars I saved not buying a PS3 to buy a case of beer, invite over some girls who will go crazy over my Wii and get laid. Have fun watching Harry Potter by yourself no matter what the quality is.
And btw my roommate bought a PS3, so I can still play any PS3 game or watch Blu-Rays.

I see where going with the 40G, no backwards capability, helps Sony to lower the price. While others say that they can't/shouldn't drop the PS3 price, what current feature would you be willing to give up, for a cheaper PS3 even sooner? And, in your opinion, how much should Sony be willing to sell below cost to get BR as the acknowledged HD format? |
The answer: No
The format wars are retarted. With DVDs, they sat on the market for a while, and then they became generally accepted. The PS2's DVD drive was importaint becuase the PS2 came out right when DVDs were being made and bought.
Blu-Ray, not so much. Sony is trying to force it though, which won't work. Now, rather then letting it sit and eventually become accepted, buyers and movie companies will avoid it.
Best case senario: Blu-Ray will be accepted in a few years. At this point, the PS3 is stuck in it's market possistion and will sit there. Using the PS3 as a launch for Blu-Ray was both a dumb idea and a pipe dream. They would be stupid to lower the price even more just to try and save Blu-Ray especially when know one knows what it is yet.
Thanks Madskillz for the info.
I admit I have a HDDVD player and not BR because of Sony. I'm too a reformed Sony fanboy - cause everything I personally bought of Sony broke in couple of years (radio, cd player, PS2, and finally 2 T.V.s
I don't know which format will win but it's awesome watching movies on HDDVD.
My brother has a BR player and he loves it as well.
