Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie talks about 3d parties, Nintendo not good at creating certain games

Have they tried ???

"...as a platform holder our responsibility is to create a large installed base for developers to create content, to provide them with the tools and the insight to help them create great games, and to have in place a profit model that motivates them to create the content and reap the rewards. We've done that; global installed base is over 67 million for Wii and there are 120 million in the DS family. So there's a large installed base, an easy platform to develop for and a strong set of tools out there. In addition to that, part of the reason why we come to a conference like this, and bring some of our key development talent is also to challenge the mindset of what content can be.

To have someone like Sakamoto-san talk about Tomodachi Collection and [Metroid's protagonist] Samus and share his experiences really is a way that we're trying to encourage developers to open their mind to do different things. On the other hand, the interesting thing about this business is that developers love to create technically advanced games, and very visually stunning games, but the fact of the matter is not all of that content is selling exceptionally well either. Look at the most recent NPD results.

I'm not sure how much was invested into a game like Dante's Inferno, or how much is invested into a game like BioShock 2, but if that sales level is the best that they will do in a particular month, and it'll fall off rapidly from there, then those games aren't going to pay off their investment. So to me, it's a much bigger question than 'why aren't developers creating core content for the Wii?' It's a much broader question: 'How can the development community create content that will strike a chord with consumers and be financially attractive?'

...For us, it is important that third parties bring their very best content to our platform. You could say 'Why?' It's because... well, let me focus in on the West. There are 28 million Wiis out there in the marketplace. We know, based on our data, that we've got consumers from 5 to 95 playing on that platform. The fact of the matter is we know we create great content for younger consumers, we know we've got great content for more casual players, and we want fantastic content for that more active player who loves Metroid or Zelda but maybe also wants something like a BioShock 2 to play as well. And we also recognize that we don't create that type of content ourselves. We're not good at it and it's not a key focus area. So we want that content on our platform, so we have to court third-party developers and encourage them to make [those games], but it also has to be financially viable for them as well." - Reggie Fils-Aime

I agree with Dante's Inferno. The cost for the publicity and the game probably won't be covered by the sales, but C'mon Nintendo can make things like Bioshock ... if they try.

Nintendo wants to make games that will get them the most number of sales. I think New Super Mario Bros. Wii has just a little more sales than Bioshock 2 (Approximately 11 million more sales)

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

BioShock was like a somewhat disturbed take on Metroid prime (first person adventure where you wander through a ruined society and recieve message from its departed inhabitants), they could at least do something like that.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Finally someone in Nintendo is actually speaking out about this and essentially, calling out third parties for ignoring their system after four years, even at a loss of profits. Nintendo has been needing to actually say this for a long time. If Nintendo has ANY weakness currently, its the fact that they have little third party support. And while they technically don't need them right now, they may in the future.

Its a symbiotic relationship. And one that currently is hurting other companies a LOT more than Nintendo. But come next generation, and the next major Nintendo console, it could hurt Nintendo as well.  As the lack of third parties is what was their major downfall on both the N64 and the GameCube.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Nintendo did (and did well) practically every genre in videogame history. Even horror, with Eternal Darkness.

They can do everything.
But of course it's in their best interest for others to make certain games for them, since they don't sell as well as Mario or Pokemon and probably cost the same - or more.

I don't know how old this is... But firstly i would like to point this out -

"global installed base is over 67 million for Wii and there are 120 million in the DS family"

Wii checks out with VGC numbers of ~68M

DS though... VGC has it at 127M

Overtracked or not?

As for the 3rd party stuff. The best way to encourage them = $$

And did Nintendo just say they were incapable of making games like BioShock 2? I call bullshit on that one. Metroid Prime has proven they know how to handle first-person stuff.

They make great zelda, metroid mario games and others... They just havent tried like you said.

What do you mean?  Reggie has been calling developers out forever.  All the time he says stuff like "I'm disapointed grand theft auto isn't here... I mean look at the install base"

etc, etc, etc.

I dunno. If they really want to make more FPS core stuff, they'd be better off creating something original than (badly) ripping off System Shock 2 again.

Of course this could also be a trick to encourage third parties: "Look, you won't have any competition from us when you provide that content. Make a game that is up to the standards of the games we make and you can reap big rewards."

That's what I was thinking as well.

Then again, asking any company to match Nintendo in quality is a pretty tall order, no matter who you are. And if most of the third parties had any intentions whatsoever to heavily invest in Wii content, they would have done so a long time ago.

"calling people out" for not making game for you is NOT the greatest way to build a sustainable, mutually relying partnership. I don't know when the Nintendo higher-ups will get this... and until them, great third party games will NOT come to Wii.
